I remember reading that in the first days of email, instead of the now-ubiquitous "@" symbol, it was the "!" instead. Wished Mastodon could've paid homage to that by formatting IDs as @user!instance :P

@n What you mean is UUCP mail, where you would specify the entire route your messages should take with these hostA!hostB!hostC!hostD

@elomatreb @n In UUCP, the "address" was really a complete delivery path from the sender to the recipient, not really an address. Think of it as a set of turns to make on a road to get somewhere, instead of a destination. And the roads changed out from under you every few days, completely invalidating the instructions on how to get to the destination system to deliver the mail. Fun times, indeed.

@n Let's not take historical accuracy too far or you'll have to write qoto.org!mastodon.social!toot.cat!jamey to reach me, carefully keeping track of which servers federate by what links... 😅

@n That would drive the average person, including myself, quite a bit on the crazy side.

@cambridgeport90 haha :D no insanity meant... But just curious, why would that drive you mad?

@n You’re probably thinking of UUCP, where it was machinename!user. So it would be the other way around!

@n I think the app will blow up when you remove the open code unfortunately. And maybe join all the instances in only one big server (like mastodon.org), and each instance admin will be a moderator
