I would disagree. As a programmer most of your work will not be directly producing pretty shinies on screen, even if you work for "pretty shinies on screen" productions. If you can't get motivated by the simplest of outputs you're not going to have fun programming. One of my never going to happen dream projects is programming tutorials where the only input is argc and the only output is the return code. How much programming can be crammed into 8 bits???

@feld You can't force people to forget. You can't force their devices to erase history either, without certain tyrannical measures. You can change their minds however. That is the difference between people and rats, isn't it?

I would say any theory of people you have that does not include yourself, has an obvious counterexample. Do you often have sudden irresistible urges to dig up ancient dirt on people and try to cancel them over it?

If you want to provide a paid service, provide a paid service, instead of trying to infringe on my right to control what is on my own device. The only way your business model works is if you own all the devices and that's pretty much what they are trying to do.

But it's their digital product they can put whatever they want in it? No, their digital product is not real (and it can't hurt you), only your device is real, and their digital product has no value without your device.
