Someone tells me that ChatGPT's quality continues to degrade.

It makes you wonder if the whole thing wasn't just some publicity stunt. Perhaps, they turned it up to a level which wasn't financially sustainable?

Complaining about "the fediverse" is a lot like complaining about "something on the internet". Lol.

Apparently, the instance which must not be named (lol) was acquired by a cryptobro (still based in the same country, it seems).

Deposits on cans got introduced a few months ago in this country to eliminate littering.

The result?
Trash bins are ripped open in search for cans with a deposit on them, causing more littering.

:picardfacepalm:

Maybe, we should revisit whether it's really good to have these gigantic corporate-y instances, rather than smaller more community based instances.

It's not just the "think of the children", it's been a bit problematic for a while now.

@jdp23 @thisismissem Noting that at one point, a Japanese friend of mine who runs an instance did tell me that people in the West tend to send a lot of bogus reports, because they don't like one kind of expression or another.

So, it might be preferable, if those were limited to ones which are actually actionable. Likely not relevant though.

@jdp23 @thisismissem "that would be illegal in the US" In the U.S., free expression is protected by the First Amendment (and honestly, that's a good thing).

In Japan, it would fall under Article 21 of the Constitution, which in this case, is seen as protecting free expression.

It would be inaccurate to suggest that this expression was "illegal in Western Europe".

Naturally though, real child porn is not protected by any of these.

Also, the E.U. e-Commerce Directive (similar to the U.S. Section 230) limited intermediary liability (which is a good thing for innovation / online expression) for communicating with another service.

There are additional measures which could be taken, such as not storing external content.

Of course, if real child porn appears, that can be dealt with accordingly, but it's important to give services a bit of breathing room.

As for that instance, I think it was acquired by a different company, at some point. I can't comment further on their moderation.

I've seen a post on the fedi that when it comes to moderation, you can't just look at the world the way it is today, you have to adapt to changes which come along.

@thisismissem @jdp23 Our admin caught sight of the smoke and defederated that specific instance around a month ago.

From an administrative perspective, it's hard to say he made the wrong decision (although, hard to say it's good either). It wasn't made lightly.

If there was better collaboration, you wouldn't be learning that there might be a bit of a problem from an outsider's report (who probably only discovered the fediverse not long ago).

Some parts of the network do not cache images.

This is probably done for peace of mind, more than it being likely that something will happen. It seems the person who developed Mastodon (but not other tools) didn't think about this at all.

Scanning discussions were held within communities for other software years ago, although that didn't go anywhere as it didn't look like a problem.

eff.org/deeplinks/2023/07/deja Section 702 (which the FBI relies on for unconstitutional mass surveillance) is on the brink of expiring again.

These "this service should be penalized for taking down content which isn't against their terms of service" bill proposals are very strange.

A platform could easily just create a vaguer terms of service which covers even more content...?

When writing apocalypse novels or scripts for apocalyptic films, remember to include a scene of people fighting over toilet paper, lol.

Isn't this a violation of the First Amendment?
