"After publication, Maca Ferguson, a spokesperson for Volunteers of America Western Washington, said the pixel was used for fundraising efforts"
Some of these deliberately added the pixel (although, it's unclear whether they knew how much data it would collect) for unrelated purposes.
"Pellerin said they had removed the code, which they attributed to a plug-in on their website."
Others appear to have been hit by supply chain issues like this where a vendor casually threw the pixel in without their knowledge (although, likely not knowing this would happen).
https://www.techdirt.com/2023/07/24/more-suicide-resource-orgs-found-to-be-monetizing-sensitive-user-data/ Ugh, the *suicide resource sites* really shouldn't be sharing sensitive data like this with Facebook.
"In some cases, filling out contact forms on the sites transmitted hashed but easily unscrambled names and email addresses to Facebook."
Very intrusive.
@ewan@beige.party @FinchHaven Fun Fact: WaPo is (or was) owned by Jeff Bezos of Amazon.
This Silicon Valley bubble can explain why they jumped onto an ignorant take from a guy who virtually no one takes seriously.
@ewan@beige.party https://qoto.org/@olives/111445843755474237 It references a racist rant by some guy linked to FB about FB's competitor (and mainstream social media can be far worse). It's old.
https://events.ccc.de/congress/2023/hub/en/event/who-killed-the-internet-and-a-promising-alternative-for-public-communication-and-social-media-the-fediverse/ Apparently, they're going to be talking about the fediverse at a conference. Dunno if it's good.
I think you can get some mileage out of it, but it's annoying when someone tries to dismiss valid concerns there by going, "Oh you can just run your own site."
It's a very obvious consequence of "censor more! censor more! censor more! why is this here?!".
I remember that Busou Renkin (武装錬金, Arms Alchemy is one translation which people gave it) had a Victor. It also had that weird butterfly guy, lol. It's an interesting #anime to watch.

@NoGoldHere @Ronoae@aethy.com Hmm.. There are links to a lot of things, however, it all seems rather unstructured and disorganized imo.

https://arstechnica.com/ai/2023/12/ai-created-virtual-influencers-are-stealing-business-from-humans/ As someone pointed out, some of this probably has something to do with the whole "brand safety" thing.
I don't really have an opinion on it though, I don't really see much how it matters. It's kind of seen as a "get lucky and make money" area.
@malteengeler Or the tendency of a few to scream about censorship, when it's the government trying to do it (rightfully), but never questioning a (very large) company's half-baked algorithm or biases.
