@Ragashingo @anicasts A lot of philosophy, references, and chaos, so lots of fun, lol.

@fediforum One particular one I've been looking into is the polarization of moderation policies.

For instance, someone might want an instance with free expression (particularly sexual expression), but without people being mean to one another

Another problem is the overuse of instance blocking (rather than simply as a response to extreme circumstances). It is very confusing for users from a usability standpoint, and it's a very blunt instrument.

This seems to stem a lot from the "my house my rules" type culture which permeates the fediverse.

Also, "No" has no real meaning (because even if someone isn't interested in it, this doesn't really matter, if there are people who are), I just threw it in as a curiosity to see what result it got. The real poll was the Yes vote.

Of course, if you have like a bajillion followers (or market it more aggressively), then the base number of responders might be a bit higher.

When looking at the poll about wanting to see an instance with free expression (but minus mean shitposters), keep in mind that the typical number of voters a poll gets is like ten.

So, it's a bit of support but it says a certain amount.

Well, even if not British, that one spends a lot of time in Cambridge lobbying the British Government.

I still remember a couple of the leaders (who are Mormons) of that extreme group (one I think British and one American) recounting what allegedly led to them wanting to ban porn.

They were abroad in some country in Europe, doing work for the Church, when they saw someone reading a magazine with someone being sexy on it.

They were outraged that such a magazine could be allowed to exist and they vowed from that day forth that they would rid the world of it.

It's all crazy.

Sometimes, I ruffle a few (although, never too many) feathers when I hold puritans to account.

It's not something I enjoy doing. In fact it can be the very opposite, particularly when I am disappointed in someone I quite like.

In fact, sometimes, the more annoyed I am, the more I like someone and I feel betrayed, and I've dealt with a certain amount of bullshit on this Internet.

Puritanical ideologies tend to be abusive in nature and coercive. The boundaries of what are indecent also have a tendency of shifting.

Puritanism is associated with psychological harms, hateful ideologies (in particular, angry ideologies), human rights violations, and other negative things.

So, to me, it is kind of a big deal. Perhaps, puritans are silly, however, it is not *merely* that they are silly.

It is also useful to consider that puritanism is not always stereotypically obvious.

In fact, one infamous right wing group (which used to blame gay people for mass shootings not that long ago), run by Mormons, started speaking the language of "feminism" to try to promote it.

New language. Same ideology. Just as flawed.

It was this group which was responsible for Steam removing all kinds of sexual content. It was this group who was responsible for Reddit doing so. It was this group which is partially behind these "age verification" proposals in legislatures.

Puritan: There's a whole genre tailored towards presumably horny teenage boys. I've gone out of my way to watch it. There are so many boobs bouncing around, why, why, why.

ffs

Puritanism is one thing which I tend to draw the line over when deciding who to spend time talking to (remember that time itself is a resource).

There is just no point in talking to someone who has such archaic values.

@trinsec trinsec.org not loading.

Well... I guess... RIP Trinsec ⚰️

If you're both an fan and a programmer, I'd suggest watching Serial Experiments Lain, although it is a very, very strange anime, lol.

It is interesting though.

I'd suggest watching Serial Experiments Lain. I think it fits this place fairly well, hehe.

Ascendance of a Bookworm: I'll stop at nothing to become a librarian / 本好きの下剋上 ~司書になるためには手段を選んでいられません~.

It's a reincarnation story where a librarian (a woman) gets reincarnated as a little girl who is obsessed with books.

Someone wanted something like this, so here it is, hehe.

Alright, obligatory reminder that this poll into whether there is interest in a free expression instance but without mean shitposters is going to close soon.
