2023 Oregon State Go Tournament

The tournament will take place October 28 and 29, 2023, in Room 328/9 of the Smith Memorial Student Union at Portland State University. The tournament includes an Open Division and a Regular Division. We will update this form with Prize details soon. All games are played using AGA Rules, with each player receiving 45 minutes of playing time plus 5 blocks of 30 seconds Byo-yomi (TD reserves the right to modify this as needed for the tournament, but will guarantee ruleset and time constraints abide by AGA requirements for Ranked Tournaments). There will be 3 rounds of play on Saturday, and 2 rounds on Sunday followed by an award ceremony. All players play in all rounds. The Open Division: - Reserved for higher ranked players (depends on sign-ups, usually you must be at least 2dan) - All games are played without Handicaps, 7.5 komi, AGA scoring (which means giving your opponent a stone when you pass and white passes last) - Pairing is organized using the Swiss system, Cash prizes for top 3 finishers (guaranteed minimum of $300, $200 and $100 dollars for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, likely higher) - Highest placing Oregonian will be named State Champion, receive a cash "Oregon Champion Prize" (amount TBD, but will be in addition to the standard prize if they take 1st, 2nd or 3rd) and have their name added to the State championship trophy which they will hold until the next State Championship. The Regular Division: - Subdivided into sections grouped by rank (likely 2 sections, maybe 3 if participation is high) - Pairings organized by a modified Swiss-McMahon, with weighted pairing to prioritize minimizing rank difference - Games are played with handicap stones when the rank difference is greater than 1 - Prizes for at least the top 3 finishers in each section (Prizes may be cash or donated prizes such as Gift certificates, Go gear and books) - "Oregon Champion Prize" (TBD) in each division will be given to highest placing Oregon resident or Oregon-based club member (in addition to regular division based prize if highest placing Oregonian is also in top 3) - Likely additional prizes for participants not based on win/loss records Submitting this form indicates your intent to join but does not guarantee a spot in the tournament. If we reach capacity, priority will be given to Oregon residents for entrance into the tournament. If you are accepted to the tournament, an entry fee of $20 will be required for Regular Division, and $30 for the Open Division, with exceptions made for folks that would be excluded from participation due to the fee. For entry fee reduction queries please email goclubportland@gmail.com. Entrants must be active members of the American Go Association during the tournament (you can get a single-tournament membership through the AGA, or get a discounted membership through your local club) Only Oregon residents or active members of an Oregon based Go club can win the Oregon Champion prize for their division. Folks from other states can still win the standard prizes in their division. Further details of the tournament, including the schedule for each day, will be posted on the Portland Go Club website portlandgoclub.com If you have issues registering or questions about the tournament email us goclubportland@gmail.com
