Did Tolkein intend for modern day Little People/Dwarfs to be linked with Dwarves from #lotr
I have thought about this alot and I think we can agree with a solid no. There is no description in his work of Dwarvews being able to intermate with any other race. In fact there is strong evidence they likely couldnt.
However hobbits could, in fact, interbreed with humans (as elves could). I suspect Tolkein intended modern day Little People to be associated with hobbits rather than dwarves.
I also say that its likelyt here is a connectiona t all because tolkein did write LotR as if it was a pre-history. So I suspect he did intend some sort of connection somewhere.
@trinsec @freemo Did Tolkien's fantasy races represent contemporary peoples? It's complicated. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolkien_and_race
@peterdrake@qoto.org Methinks there's a misunderstanding with me here. I meant Tolkien's name as in literally his name. Not this 'Tolkein' that @freemo@qoto.org keeps spelling.
@peterdrake
This seems to address racism more so than racial prehistory.
I think its clear that huamns from his books are modern day race of humans. I think its also clear many modern day species like spiders and eagles are intended to be descended from those in the boom.
That said orcs and dwarves are certainly less clear but i think its a safe bet that tolkein intended modern day races to be connected to these anctient races in some way.
