Oh boy, my #PyCon proposal is number 734. Gonna be some stiff competition this year.
I was reminded of this when replying to someone else and I thought I'd post it separately, here's a 2015 blog post from @bderickson that I found very useful about how to generate LaTeX using Jinja2: http://eosrei.net/articles/2015/11/latex-templates-python-and-jinja2-generate-pdfs
@arkedos A fun little challenge there is that Jinja uses some of the same characters as LaTeX in its syntax, so I had to modify the grammar of Jinja's templates (it's easier than it sounds). There's a blog post on how to do it here: http://eosrei.net/articles/2015/11/latex-templates-python-and-jinja2-generate-pdfs
@arkedos I also love my TeX resume. I wrote a thing that takes resume content in as YAML and generates a TeX resume from it: https://github.com/pganssle/resume-tex
It probably took me more time to write than it will save me over a lifetime of manual resume edits, but it was still fun.
Hello world. Bio says the important things. I'm a PhD student using biophysical techniques and computational simulation of molecular systems to understand various aspects of protein behavior and regulation. I always choose FOSS tools where possible in my work. Now lets talk *nix and science!

I'm really glad people were tweeting about getting their #PyCon proposals in, because I really let the deadline sneak up on me this year.
Mozilla just announced that we chose @matrix as IRC replacement for synchronous messaging. Matrix's announcement is here: https://matrix.org/blog/2019/12/19/welcoming-mozilla-to-matrix/
@pganssle One thing that concerns me is that there is no incentive for news outlets or researchers/universities to be careful in their reporting of science.
If it were up to me, nothing would be reported in the popular press without pre-registration and replication.
This paper from 1975 ominously foreshadows the replication crisis and detailing how to prevent it: https://faculty.washington.edu/agg/pdf/Gwald_PsychBull_1975.OCR.pdf
Interesting and somewhat depressing. The current generation of scientists is doing better by looking at incentives, but it's an uphill battle.

Why release one version of #Python if you can release four?
This merry season, we bring you Python 3.8.1, 3.7.6, 3.6.10, and 3.9.0a2. We hope you'll enjoy them at least as much as we did packaging them!

Been issuing <details> for a while now, but the <summary> tag is new to me, very nice!

Do you want to download an archive of an entire Yahoo Group? Here’s how. But do it today, because you may not be able to do it this way after tomorrow.

I guess it's #introduction time-
I'm an audio engineer, multimedia developer, and occasional indie game dev- Previously employed by several research institutions in the field of accessible media / accessible research, currently looking for remote / semi-remote work for my incredibly niche skillset.
I'm in to Python, Rust, and Unity/C#, but I've got eyes on Elixir in the future.
I love hackathons, all things procedural, and anything with wheels.
I'm an absolute New Englander, but I've lived in Washington, California, China, and Spain. Currently based in Honolulu.
Here's what I've been making in between the twin existential ennuis of freelance work and trying to find a stable job:
Mastodon is prone to bubbles.
When you look for new people to follow you check the public timelines, which by design mostly contains people already followed by people on your instance. It's hard to break out of that.
Here's what you do.
1) Go to https://mastodon.social/tags/YourTagHere but change the last bit to a hashtag of your choosing.
2) Click boost on all the cool stuff.
Also, use hashtags in your own posts and boost cool stuff with gay abandon!
