Earlier this year, I became aware of STANDARD EBOOKS, a donation-dependent group of edtiors and layout experts who have been doing the amazing work of taking out-of-copyright books, turning them into top-quality ebooks, and then releasing them for free.

Some of the books they've done are in the Internet Archive here:

They're seeking 75 patrons in December to keep themselves afloat, consider donating to this amazing cause.

@glyph Can your little one read? I was thinking that I'd get my kids phones as soon as they can actually use them for texting and when they can read stuff like contact names, etc.

Of course, as a free range style parent, it was basically never in doubt that I'd be giving my kids phones young, since I want them to be independent and the cell phone is probably the most powerful tool for providing autonomy and safety (to anyone) that exists in the modern world.

@glyph Did you really receive opprobrium from like... people in person? Or is that exaggeration? Who was this from?

I can't imagine anyone that I would voluntarily spend time with providing anything I would describe as "opprobrium" over a parenting decision like this, but maybe I'm a bit naïve, or imagining a different kind of interaction.

If you are thinking of submitting to PyCon 2023 and would like to see some examples of proposals that have been successful in the past, I maintain markdown files with all my previous conference proposals here: gitlab.com/pganssle/proposals

It's not too late! #PyConUS 2023 Call for Proposals is still open for 1 more week. We are looking for speakers of all levels, backgrounds and areas of expertise so head to bit.ly/3z5ZQ1x and submit your proposal today!

@carlton I know that @hynek likes it, and I have always been impressed with Ofek Lev (the author)'s approach to packaging topics, but I haven't had a chance to play with it myself.

rc2 had some bugs that are now fixed tox.wiki/en/latest/changelog.h; rc3 will become the stable release soon unless you report further bugs; this is your final call to arms!

@webology @carlton I thought they were supposed to be useful for applications? I never really understood the point of either one, and I thought that was because I mostly work on libraries.

If you're writing a tutorial on managing Python dependencies for an application, be sure to add this line: "As soon as you pin one dependency, you must pin the entire dependency tree." So many people pin their direct dependencies, and then get confused why things are incompatible a few years later. #Python

On further consideration, I can imagine wanting to post generated answers in the likely event that the original service goes down, or as a cache, but that seems like it should be a very clearly different thing than a person writing an answer, marked as such, etc.

Submitted a discussion group proposal for #NERDsummit 2023. New England tech folks, come join me!

I guess I understand why they want to be cautious about not making policies in a knee-jerk fashion, but I feel like "temporary" should be unnecessary here: meta.stackoverflow.com/q/42183

Posting GPT answers on StackOverflow is like checking in generated code or something. If someone wanted a GPT answer they could ask GPT, no?

The video of my tutorial on Bayesian Decision Analysis, from PyData Global 2022, is available now.

@cfbolz Jeez this sounds like it could create some very annoying-to-debug situations. 😅

CPython bug: github.com/python/cpython/issu

I learned again that I know nothing about network programming :-(
