A lot of very compelling stories coming out of the BeautifulSoup Open Space. BS has helped get dog racing banned in Florida, and facilitated access to and use of scientific data, among many other things.

"The addition of type hints [to BeautifulSoup] has found probably about 18 subtle bugs".

@leonardr suggests that users of BeautifulSoup should probably test the next beta.

Another theme: Automating manual processes. BeautifulSoup has helped save much toil over the past 20 years!

Theme so far of the open space: Beautiful Soup has made it easy to preserve inaccessible archives.

Anyone lose a dark blue folio with very well written notes in Room 321 at #PyConUS? I dropped it off at the registration desk so stop by there if you see this.

Please boost for spread!

@rhave @kyhwana I really wish there was a better name and reference for the HTML date standard. RFC3339 is good for a human readable interchange for computers, but its treatment of timezones makes it less suitable for a computer/human interchange.

ISO-8601 can die in a fire.

@jerub @rhave @kyhwana "Use the part of ISO 8601 that everyone thinks of as RFC3339 but is actually not because of time zones" is certainly not as catchy 😛

Today at #PyConUS we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of @leonardr's library Beautiful Soup as an Open Space!

Join us in:
Room 315
1:45-2:30pm

for the party, featuring zines and lightning talks, and say hi to Leonard!

Like I just said on stage at #PyConUS , the @pytexas virtual meetup happens every month, first Tuesday of the month, at 8pm central. The meetup happens on Discord, so you can invite some Texas into wherever you are!

Our CFP is always open, so if you want to speak, go sign up. If you want help building your talk, we can help! Talk to me, I got you!

"But other parsers know too much about HTML. They choke on or try to rewrite bad markup. They assume you care about the whole document. A pirate might make you walk the plank, but only a parser would make you walk the whole tree."

Happy 20th birthday to the #Python screen-scraping library Beautiful Soup by @leonardr .

Man, some folks do such a good job with the design of their slides, it makes me want to do better.

Picture is from [Steph Orella Bello](sporella.xyz)'s talk, but there are many other intimidatingly good presentations out there.

Juggling starts a little early today: 3:45 in the open space hallway! #PyConUS

Luckily my target audience — parents of 2-6 year olds — is used to getting up early 😅

"Hm... maybe if I wear a fake mustache and a hat, I can sign up for two lightning talks in a row, and then I don't have to cut this one down quite so brutally...."

Some motivation for you to get up and to the venue early tomorrow morning: I'll be giving a lightning talk about my (FOSS) chord trainer application (for children).
