I've come to the conclusion that while hummingbirds aren't particularly afraid of anything, they don't like the situation to change while they're at the feeder.

I can be working in the yard on a weekend like this, a hummingbird will fly right up to me, look me over, and then go to the feeder. But if I walk away it will fly away. If I'm not there when it arrives and then walk up, it will fly away.

But as long as nothing changes after it's cased the joint, it's fine with pretty much anything. Including a cat sitting four feet away and not even trying to keep still.

I always thought a Loomer was someone who looms menacingly behind their opponent during a debate.

I don't understand why anyone allows a server or network appliances to access the web by default. If you need to update it, or if as part of its functionality it must dynamically access some specific remote content, either populate your own update server and do it from there, or enable a firewall rule or a route to only the approved remote address.

@kravietz Why do AI cartoons always look like Ben Garrison drew them?

(No, if you're not familiar with him don't look him up. He's repellant.)

Okay, that's enough for the week. Off to the park to catch and eat geese. Who's with me?

@hannu_ikonen @kagan
Arizona has no such laws. In fact it offers tax incentives to encourage rainwater harvesting.

You might be thinking of a company that bought some farmland with an existing Colorado river water allocation, in order to divert the water to a suburban development. Definitely a manifestation of screwed up water rights but not really related.

@kagan There've been cases of countries selling their water systems to foreign companies, and then at those companies' behest making it illegal for citizens to even capture their own roof water.

So while it sounds preposterous to "own the sun", it is not beyond the realm of possibility that a captive government could make it illegal for citizens to have solar power collectors of their own.

@BashStKid @IanCykowski

(While a girlfriend did take a picture of me running down the beach at Portmeirion for this purpose, I've yet to get around to photoshopping a weather balloon chasing me.)

Llangrannog, its cliffs, and the peninsula of Ynys Lochtyn offered some of the most otherworldly and dramatic coastal scenery I've ever witnessed.

Who knew the Ceredigion area of mid/west Wales offered all this?

There are LOADS more photos from this hike, and I implore you to gaze upon them here iancylkowski.com/blog/2024/9/9 👍

@BashStKid @IanCykowski

You wouldn't have a list of the beer and ale taps and malts this hypothetical beach pub has, would you?

@IanCykowski @BashStKid Yes, but until you've been to Portmeirion, you've never actually been chased down the beach by a big menacing white ball that roars at you.

Trump in a morning-after phone call to Fox News: "So many things I said were debunked. Totally debunked. ... Every time I spoke they’d correct me"

Poor guy, being debunked like that. Nobody has ever been so debunked as him. Big men come up to him with tears in their eyes saying, "Sir, nobody has ever been so debunked as you."

@beebrookshire It's funny that pop culture (mostly Marvel Comics) has this whole ongoing thing about mutants vs. humans. Humans are mutants. Everything alive today is the product of billions of mutations, selected by reproductive success.

@chris Rat's sphincters actually make very poor headphone jacks.

@somafm Now do another one where you project the SOMAFM logo on the houses of parliament at night
