Haiku:

The roses are red
And the violets are blue
Happy Valentines

Norfolk Southern, the company whose train derailed in Ohio and unleashed chemicals, made a record $12 billion in revenue last year.

Instead of investing in better safety measures, what did the company do? It authorized a $10 billion stock buyback.

Corporate greed, folks.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
When will you notice
That second line's not true

I've been using a Macbook Air for something like a decade, usually with the camera covered with an @eff privacy sticker:

supporters.eff.org/shop/laptop

It's taken me this long to realize it was interfering with the ambient light sensor, sitting there almost invisibly about 1/4" away from the camera and to move it.

I remember this well.

How pessimism about renewables was proved wrong.

Incumbent German electricity suppliers said in 1993 that renewables could never provide more than 4% of electricity.

In 2022 50% of German electricity was from renewables, mainly wind and solar.

If there's a country where people are eating with the lights switched off to save power, are those the unlit suplands?

Even if I posted reaction gifs, I'd never post a reaction gif of a black person. Particularly one that's in any way comical or foolish in appearance. There's something of minstrelsy in the act when white people do this.

society: damn misinfo at scale is getting a bit out of hand lately. seems like a problem.

tech guys: i have invented a machine that generates misinformation. is that helpful?

I still think it's funny that smart electrical sockets came onto the market about 5 years after the last appliance more complicated than a table lamp that can be left in a switched on state and controlled via its power cord went off the market.

Let me get this straight. Republicans spent Friday cosplaying machismo by encouraging their supporters to shoot down the Chinese spy balloon, which was 11 miles up in the atmosphere, a balloon so large it could hold an entire football stadium inside of it. No consideration of the danger of their useless bullets falling back to earth.

Meanwhile, Biden had already given the order to the military to shoot it down when it was safe to do so back on *Wednesday.* They had already jammed their signals so it couldn’t send any info back to China, and instead was collecting info on the satellite.

So as usual, we have Republicans acting like idiots, encouraging actions that posed danger to the American people, all the while hoping to “stick it to Biden,” when in actuality, Biden had already handled the situation days before by involving the military who had neutralized the threat and then ultimately shot down the balloon over the waters past South Carolina.

Vote blue, people. #news

Every pet I've ever had -- and it's quite a few -- is because someone else didn't do what they were supposed to. It's not a chosen or preferred cause of mine, it's a result of, out of basic decency, not having a choice: I've stepped up because someone had to.

IMO there's shockingly little overlap between people who have pets and people who ought to.

So why does Judy Jetson never bat an eye when the song Jet Screamer sings and credits to her, "Eep Opp Ork Ah Ah", isn't the one she sent in?

Spent the day judging the @Scholastic @artandwriting awards with @ShreyasNavare and @che_saunders. Saw hundreds of high school editorial cartoons, and these kids are PISSED about climate change, ocean pollution, Roe v Wade reversal, and most of all, school shootings/guns.

Quick question for UK Mastodonians. Was filling its waterways with human excrement the very first thing Britain did with its new "freedom", or did the blue passport thing come first?
