..remind me of when a few weeks ago, I crossed a busy street in a NW Portland neighborhood, one which had a press-to-activate pedestrian signal. As soon as I started across I realized that a coyote had joined me. Apparently he or she had been lurking nearby waiting for someone to come along and push the button.
Amusing that Trump has been talking about 2000% tariffs right about the time it was noticed that he's charging $60 for bibles he's getting from China for $3.
I wonder if whoever did the arithmetic for him also mentioned that it's not a tariff if it goes in the seller's own pocket?

There's an even bigger problem here, which is that at best these are summaries of output stages that are chained together in the model, NOT descriptions of the processes that generated those output stages.
OpenAI should be well aware that LLMs are not able to accurately report *why* they did something. They are only able to make up post-hoc rationalizations based on their context window including their output.
So these are at best guesses, not true descriptions of motivations or processes.

Whatever improvements ChatGPT o1-preview may have to offer, they've introduced a whole new layer of bullshit with the "status messages" that make up nonsensical tasks that it pretends to be doing.
This matters—a lot—because this particular bullshit is not a limitation of the system.
This is an active choice by OpenAI to mislead people about what the system is doing. It’s Wizard of Oz shit.
The fact that they use their own bullshit generator to do it is icing on the irony cake.

I've seen insane claims about chemtrails and radar being used to create and direct hurricanes.
Scientific illiteracy is a real problem in this country. The amount of energy in even a moderate hurricane exceeds the total electrical generating capacity of the United States, by at least two orders of magnitude. A hurricane contains as much energy as a nuclear war. The idea that we could secretly be generating them with radar stations is ... words fail.

The speaker of the house just wrote a letter to Zelenskyy demanding the resignation of his ambassador.
It is in no way appropriate for the speaker to write such a letter. He does not represent the US, that falls to the executive branch He does not even speak for the legislative branch inasmuch as he cannot make representations about its will on any subject it hasn't actually voted on.

@EugeneMcParland Free expression is all very well, but his belligerence brings it to the level of public disorder.
However, such is the nature of Japanese culture that he's probably doing more good than harm. This kind of public spectacle is not well-regarded there to say the least, and he's doing more to bring disrepute to his own positions than an opponent could ever accomplish.

And I miss her.
I've come to the conclusion that while hummingbirds aren't particularly afraid of anything, they don't like the situation to change while they're at the feeder.
I can be working in the yard on a weekend like this, a hummingbird will fly right up to me, look me over, and then go to the feeder. But if I walk away it will fly away. If I'm not there when it arrives and then walk up, it will fly away.
But as long as nothing changes after it's cased the joint, it's fine with pretty much anything. Including a cat sitting four feet away and not even trying to keep still.
I always thought a Loomer was someone who looms menacingly behind their opponent during a debate.
