I guess maybe don't use references chatGPT throws at you not because they can be wrong or fake but because, idk, you haven't actually read them?? If people first read & understand stuff they wanna cite, like one does, perhaps it wouldn't matter how they got to those references. It's weird to be scandalized by the possibility of a model making up references while normalizing scientists' lack of basic scientific integrity. I know which one is more horrifying to me.
Non-profit journals as a solution to open science?
Publishers charge researchers incredible amounts to remove paywalls from their own papers...and make unbelievable profits from doing so. Several have an >30% profit margin.
Initiatives such as @PeerCommunityIn provide an alternative: open access, non-profit journals that are free to publish in.

I have a doctorate in Artificial Intelligence and I just needed 7(!) tries to spell the word "Artificial" correctly. I guess I'm more tired than I'm willing to admit to myself.

A z-curve analysis
https://replicationindex.com/2022/10/20/princeton-talk-about-z-curve/
The % of significant (p < .05, z > 2) results has not changed much (ODR = 75% vs. 71). However, the actual power to get these results has increased a lot (EDR = 21% vs. 68%). As a result, the false discovery risk has decreased from 20% to 2%.
Look out for the 2023 replicability rankings coming soon.

#France paid €31 million for article processing charges (#APCs) in 2020, about 3x what it paid in 2013. It predicts it will pay between €50m and €68m for APCs in 2030.
In addition, it paid €87.5m for #subscriptions in 2020 and predicts it could pay €97.5m in 2030.

@BorisBarbour @david_colquhoun of course conclusions will be similar, but not the same, and this is one case. It will be almost impossible to explain if you don't know what methodological falsificationism or severe testing is. Reading my textbook would teach you about these things - this is a good starting point. https://lakens.github.io/statistical_inferences/questions.html?q=Methodological#three-statistical-philosophies
Dear #Americans of #Mastodon, you have a wonderful opportunity that is rarely granted to you. For the first time, you're in an online public space that is not American, that is not centered around the US, and as I'm typing this, a place where the majority of users are not Americans. You can open yourselves to the world as you've rarely been able to before.
So please, stop expressing yourselves like the US is the default country here and that most users are Americans. We're not. Love.
antisemitism, fediverse, rant
A Jewish politician comes onto the fediverse- and what is he welcomed with?
A comment about how he doesn't deserve to be boosted.
A comment about Israel despite him not mentioning Israel.
This is why Jews don't feel safe on the general Fediverse folks. This right here.
It's why I felt so compelled that I made an instance for Jews where this isn't allowed.
History made: 🏳️⚧️ 🏳️🌈Scotland becomes the first constituent country of the UK to adopt a system of ‘self-ID’ and the reversal of the medicalisation of gender recognition.

I have just finished rolling out the Python version of the R package 'statcheck", created by prof. Michèle Nuijten.
Statcheck can be used to extract and analyze statistical results from scientific articles.
Currently working on adding the option to extract tables.
If anyone would like to check it out, here is the repo:

Hi Everyone! Another Twitter (@LauraAzolla) deserter here, hoping to do some science networking online via an alternative route. I'm a scientist, lecturer, climber, sailor and photographer. I'm finishing my PhD thesis at @utrechtuniversity on Azolla #fern #metagenomes and #genomics (https://github.com/lauralwd/azolla_phd_thesis). Also, I just started a new job teaching bioinformatics to PhD candidates, also at UU. I'm an #openscience enthusiast, my code and writings are on (https://github.com/lauralwd)!
I've just read the Vice article about Transgender Dataset.
There is nothing wrong (in my cautious opinion) with teaching AI with any data we have access to.
BUT there is so much wrong with:
1) doing "science" with an obviously transphobic reason of "hormone-taking terrorists";
2) processing and publishing sensitive data without consent or "substantial public interest"
3) faking efforts to contact people whose data somebody uses
It is important to consider how and why we process (not just sensitive) information. Our goal should be to avoid doing harm at every step, not only following the law and ethical standards.
As part of one project, we downloaded a public dataset of Polish active psychologists and attached their public emails to it. It is possible to access the dataset at GitHub, but emails are hidden, so predatory journals will not be able to use it.

@UlrikeHahn Agree. This is the US way of dealing with these situations. Manage the reputation, do not have the difficult conversation about what actually went wrong and how to prevent it in the future. This is not really an example of vision and leadership from APS and it is likely detrimental to future editorships.
Mastodon explained in simple terms, a thread:
I've decided to make a simple explanation of how Mastodon servers work. It's a lot easier to understand than people think, so this is a good starting point for all new Mastodon users.
The first thing you need to understand is Mastodon is federated, like Russia...
