@steveroyle oooh, just in time for me to share this with my biochem students before their amino acid quiz on Monday!
As an undergrad myself, I came up with phonetic for Phe and Trp (tWip-tophan) and Asp (aspar-Dic acid). Arg is the pirate amino acid (Arrrrr-ginine)! Asn is basically Asp with added N (the Q for Gln is just a WTF). The side chain for Val is a V, but unfortunately the L shape goes to Ile rather than Leu. I’m not seeing a K shape for Lys though…

I have been mystified why K represented Lysine for many years. Undergrad #biochemistry lecturer said “I don't know why, but I assume it is because of the end of the side chain looks like a K”. Well, turns out the answer is more simple.

20 years ago today I had the amazing fortune to get to spend a day diving in Alvin to the bottom of the ocean on the East Pacific Rise!
Still having a hard time believing (a) that actually happened to me! (b) it has been that long!
In the baby photo of me, I’m in the Alvin pilot’s usual spot. Behind me you can see that the outside sea temperature at that moment was 1.8 °C and we were 1559.4 meters deep.
I did enjoy all the crab parties &c. on Tumblr, but my favourite #Kissinger snark is from "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!" this past weekend:
Peter: At least Elon used to be able to say "I’m not the worst human with Kissinger still alive."

Students asked if they could culture my belly button. Not only is that a hell yeah for #science, but also I was pretty tickled that they felt comfortable asking this at the end of the first week of classes!! #teachergoals #microbiology (probably lots of normal harmless Staphylococcus epidermidis)
I love when Canvas throws up a comment after I miss a decimal point: “This student has received an unusually high grade.” I agree that 55/7 is pretty unusual, but maybe I want the class average to be 247% 😏
