I stopped checking mastodon along with almost every other online endeavor for a while, and checking back in makes me realize: it's time to get off of qoto. Every time I see certain things, I'm sorry I ever signed up here. I hate losing everything I posted here, but there is no joy in staying, either.
And this is why mastodon's design tradeoffs, while fine on a technical level, are tragic on a social level. I don't know where to go, and have no confidence that anywhere I might go won't end up with the same issues over time.
Most people, faced with this, just stop using mastodon. I'd rather not, but other server options don't spring readily to mind.

@pwinn you do t have to loose everythi g. You can migrate to a new server. But if you have any problems you should report them so the mod team can address it. But either way happy to help you get migrated if need be.
@pwinn Hey, I'm glad to see you back around the fedi. If you are looking for a new instance I can recommend mine. I put a lot of thought into where I would migrate when leaving m.s and I chose this instance for a few reasons:
- Transparent, democratic governance
- Co-op structure with mandatory dues guarantees financial sustainability (I pay £1/month, so worth it)
- The mods are pretty chill and do a good job dealing with bad actors but don't have trigger fingers for defederation
@pwinn And yeah the migration process in masto is pretty easy. You can keep all your followers and most of your follows and lists. The only thing you can't really migrate are posts, but you can keep your old account up and link to it. Let me know if I can help with anything or if you have any questions.
@Eliot_L Right, it's the old posts I'd miss. I get why they aren't easily migrated, I just... well, I guess I wish I'd set up on my own domain from day one!
@pwinn Curious, what kind of things are you seeing that you don't like? If you did, maybe someone can suggest another instance that you would like better if such an instance exists.
