@freemo Will do that. Too bad GitLab doesn't support authenticating against Mastodon with OAuth?

@rmerriam @freemo But still needs some cell padding for readability.

@kate Hmm, sounds like you're talking about the doc comment needing to refer to the arguments by name (if talks about them at all) instead of simply putting a comment beside them as in your example? (And having to repeat the type.)

I thought you were talking about the particular comment text in your example being redundant with the function and argument names.

@freemo Typos:

"alongside" for "along side"
"don't" for "dont"
"let's" for "lets"
"it's important" for "its important"
"It's been" for "Its been"
"it's right" for "its right"
"isn't" for "isnt"
"changed; excited, I" for "changed, excited I"
"Gab" for "GAB"

You need to correct these if you want journalists to take you seriously.

Arguable but still probably style improvements:
"swastika-wielding" for "swastika wielding"
"genocide-wanting" for "genocide wanting"
"old, and" for "old and"
"drama, and" for "drama and"
"prejudice, this" for "prejudice this"
"STEM-oriented" for "STEM oriented"

Is this useful? I can do it for the whole article if you want, but will be a lot of work, so I don't want to do it if you'll just ignore it.

@rmerriam if this were twitter surely one of us would be calling the other a Nazi by now

Eric Schlaepfer and @oskay 's book "Open Circuits' is a masterpiece. It makes me want to cut open every electronic device in my house to look inside. Helpfully, though, it solves the same problem it creates, because they already did this for me. My electronics are safe ... well, at least from the cutting wheel. Most of them. For now.

twitter, musk

@lauren PayPal is awful for users but not for investors. But, as I commented in the post I linked, I do not think is Musk's plan to make it pay no matter what.

@kate I never do this, for exactly the reason you say. I might comment "Traverses parent links through the tree in O($levels) time" and "0 is the same node, 1 is parent, 2 is grandparent". You are using a documentation tool that omits the parameter names from the output? Surely there is a better one, no?

@rmerriam @freemo Interesting. Presumably BitBucket is aping GFM. I didn't know GFM had syntax for adding padding.

It seems that the alleged shooter of is non binary. That would make the hypothesis of hate crime even more bizzare. Anyway I hope they will cripple in jail where they belong

@lauren Demise seems unlikely. Contraction, perhaps. Too early to tell.

Markdown Tables
----------------

It looks like the tables need some work. The width is not handled properly:

Right | Left | Center
-----------------:| :----------- |:-----------:
Computer | $1600 | one
Phone | $12 | three
Pipe | $1 | eleven

@rmerriam @freemo Interesting! Markdown doesn't have tables. Even CommonMark doesn't have tables. GLFM and GFM do.

But apparently 's pseudo-Markdown does too! The widths look fine to me, they just need some cell padding. And the alignment is wrong.

birdsite, cryptocurrency, musk

@mathlover Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see failwhales, maybe even for several days running. But remember that failwhales were common ten years ago, and Twitter kept growing. What fraction of Twitter's quarter billion users will abandon it forever if goes failwhale for a solid week in December? Surely less than half.

I think Musk's objective with Twitter is, as he declared in the TED interview, not financial. He'd previously declared an intention to start up his own press enterprise to compensate for what he saw as the bias of existing USA press outlets. (That's when the USA press started really going after him.)

Eventually he didn't have to start his own press enterprise; bought Twitter instead. Is Musk's tool for reshaping discourse in his favor. That will still work with only 100 million or 50 million users. Of course, better if doesn't lose too much money, but controlling memespace is key to controlling outer space.

Facebook, Twitter

@chribonn @NorCal_Lynne @jeffjarvis @tomwatson Confusing Mastodon with a company isn't about being "tech-savvy" or not "tech-savvy". It's about treating a community of people as a community of people and not as a vendor or a machine.

Similarly, when you are using Facebook, it is to your benefit to understand that Facebook is also operated by human beings who can invade your privacy. Hiding those human beings behind a "smooth GUI", as you are advocating, obscures the power relations in the situation and prevents vulnerable people from protecting themselves.
