I enjoy things around information theory (and data compression), complexity theory (and cryptography), read hard scifi, currently work on weird ML (we'll see how it goes), am somewhat literal minded and have approximate knowledge of random things. I like when statements have truth values, and when things can be described simply (which is not exactly the same as shortly) and yet have interesting properties.
I live in the largest city of Switzerland (and yet have cow and sheep pastures and a swimmable lake within a few hundred meters of my place :)). I speak Polish, English, German, and can understand simple Swiss German and French.
If in doubt, please err on the side of being direct with me. I very much appreciate when people tell me that I'm being inaccurate. I think that satisfying people's curiosity is the most important thing I could be doing (and usually enjoy doing it). I am normally terse in my writing and would appreciate requests to verbosify.
I appreciate it if my grammar or style is corrected (in any of the languages I use here).

@_thegeoff Therac-25 was ~due to missing anew category of risks (even if the computer is not broken, the suggested might do something other than what was intended) and due to missing feedback channels from users of equipment.
Kaprun fire is a good example for usefulness of defense in depth (and how a strong single layer defense might disappear due to mistakes/game of telephone).

@pozorvlak @zip how does one even define the difference? Either way you'll end up associating decrease in pain with other ancillary effects of the drug, so a positive association of those effects gets reinforced anyway.
@_thegeoff in general, why isn't it a better idea to weigh liquids? I would assume that their density is usually accurately known, and scales omit a few silly problems with graduations: nonlevel ground, gross mixups (e.g. of multiple graduations), and deformations of the container (dents or squeezing for metal, heat -related ones for plastic).

Then I think I phrased it poorly. Alternative phrasing: satisfying curiosity is the most important thing ever. (And maybe it's essentially equivalent to what you said now?)

There's also an approach that you might see as in-between or as significantly different from both: it's your responsibility to learn, but mine to answer any questions you might have, for as long as it takes to do so.
Apart from wireless nature, I saw two complaints that imo made sense: one was that a portable controller risked accidental inputs more than a fixed one and the other was a lack of ~independent "stop everything" control.
@cstross I don't understand why thermobaric grenades alone, before the introduction of drones, haven't caused a significant fraction of those changes. Is it because the range of a grenade launcher is much smaller than the range of a rifle?

What is the value of observers that are prevented from seeing ~anything? Is it in them being able to see things that are too large to be hidden or something else?
@grrrr_shark it you haven't played it already, Outer Wilds. There's some amount of sadness in the story, but it's not overwhelming and the game was very immersive for me.
