Eye for an eye in context meant, "No more than an eye for an eye."

That's what I read back before the internet. Now that we have wikipedia, I see other punishments that, to me, seem to far outweigh the crime. If the Code of Hamurabi brought sanity to contract law, I'd hate to have seen what it looked like before.
