@ChrisMayLA6 Hmm. Are these people economists or just "personalities"? 1 to 2 percent inflation is normal and expected in a functioning economy. It's the target. It's what you want.
@Dhmspector Well, I would imagine he's stressed. He's just trying to stay out of prison.
Don't. Ever. Publish. Stuff. That. ONLY. Supports. Dark. Mode.
I mean, I know a LOT of people love dark mode, and given the benefits that darkening interfaces provides... I get it.
But there are some people (like me) who may be visually impaired. Astigmatism, for example, can make reading text that is white on dark a real PITA. An effect known as "halation" occurs, where each letter behaves as if it were a flashlight, gaining its own halo of light and making all text read more blurry than normal.
No matter how good your glasses are, astigmatism still causes you to see a little blurry—it's something you get used to. But this damn effect makes all the text read as if you don't have your glasses on, or even worse, leading to much more tired eyes or even pain.
For everyone's sake, if you really care about accessibility, respect user preferences. If you want a dark interface by default, offer a light version if the user specifies it (in web design, this would be prefers-color-scheme: light
). The same goes for light interfaces.
@claralistensprechen3rd @sasyecat Yes, and for some it's a really, really big deal. I've never understood that. (Very hetero male here, by the way. Pretty much fearless. Engaged in lots of manly behaviors and activities that would scare the crap out of most. And so what? Who I am has nothing to do with who you are. Do your thing and I'm there for it, whatever it is.)
@theogrin Engineer here. I use to use my wife as a sounding board (with her permission). The fastest way to find out if you really understand something is to explain it to someone. Presentation going along fine until "Uh, wait a second. Nope. I'll get back to you..."
@servelan Chaos is the objective so none of this needs to make sense.
@codinghorror Purple ink here. Seen blue a few times. Never any other colors, though.
My high school was still in the mimeograph era when I started there, but by college it was all photocopies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimeograph
Hi Fedi Family,
In 2008 Californians voted for Prop8 that defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman in the California constitution. While this was defeated in courts this draconian Prop8 language is still in the California constitution. Justice tHomas and the right wing SCOTUS is openly hinting at destroying precedent and trampling rights. If they overturned Obergefell - the Prop8 language in the California Constitution will act as a “trigger law”, raining havoc on queer families like mine across California.
Please spread the word to vote “YES” to repeal Prop8 (2008) from the California constitution in Nov 2024. Talk to your friends, family and colleagues about it.
Boosts appreciated.

@AmishSuperModel In some cases, such as myself, this is the case. In other cases, such as my younger daughter, there are actual perpetual introverts. Lol.
NBC News:
UAW hits Trump and Musk with federal labor charges over union-busting comments
The United Auto Workers on Tuesday filed federal labor charges with the National Labor Relations Board against former President Donald Trump and... Elon Musk for publicly applauding the practice of firing employees who threaten to strike.
It is illegal to fire workers who threaten to strike, because the right to strike is protected under federal labor law.

@theogrin Exactly. The first "chatbot" was created in the mid-1960s. It was called Eliza, created by Joe Weizenbaum at MIT. You can easily get Eliza running on your machine and play with it. I first encountered it in 1970 and it was running the classic script called Doctor that mimics a psychoanalyst. I was very impressed, of course.
Weizenbaum was shocked that his secretary, a perfectly intelligent woman, wanted to have a private conversation with Eliza to discuss her marriage. He was so shocked he studied and wrote about how easily humans fall for "artificial intelligence".
The original source code to Eliza has now been found and published in the public domain. It's really quite simple. Clever and creative, yes. Intelligent, no. But it was the first program to pass the Turing Test.
@nickapos @ChrisMayLA6 Acquiring great wealth nearly always involves luck, and Musk has had that. But I have to give him credit for discovering the new angle of presenting himself as a tech genius (which he is not) and baiting those who worship tech into investing huge sums of money in him.
We live in a tech-hungry world and Musk is taking direct advantage of that by learning to string buzzwords together and to paint himself as a smartie. When his charade collapses is anyone's guess.
Though she showed up pregnant, bleeding and in pain, emergency room doctors in Texas turned Kyleigh Thurman away, handing her a pamphlet on miscarriage and telling her to “let nature take its course.”
Three days later, the ER finally admitted her. But it was too late; her fallopian tube had already ruptured.
There are at least 100 others like her.

@gentlegardener Even so, I will continue to do my part. ;-)
@ChrisMayLA6 Exactly. The planet doesn't need saving. It's been through FAR worse than we can come up with. It's WE who need saving.
@nickapos @ChrisMayLA6 Very far indeed, I think. It will eventually come and I suspect it will come suddenly. But we are definitely not there yet. LLMs are nothing more than fancy indexers. AI is something else altogether.
@cohentheblue @GrimmReality I'm with you on all that. At the same time I get that it's hard to stick to the high road when howler monkeys are pooping in their hand and flinging at you. ;-) (don't ask how I know this.)
