@Hyolobrika @skells Why would it make them detached and cruel? The nation would be their property, it would be in their interest to see it prosper just like you would want for your own property. with democracy people are only temporarily in charge of it, so if they ruin things it's not even theirs anyway, and after they get voted out they won't ever be punished for it

@augustus @lain our tradition is to slap the shit out of each other when we get out of hand while working hard to sit down at a table asap

kings queens, dukes, barons, capitalists and unions - it's a small island and we find a way to get along come what may.

@lain @augustus it's worked for over a thousand years and, while due for one of its regular tune ups, I dig it

@augustus check out Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France if you get the time

@augustus

There exists in such a case a certain institution or law; let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer goes gaily up to it and says, “I don’t see the use of this; let us clear it away.” To which the more intelligent type of reformer will do well to answer: “If you don’t see the use of it, I certainly won’t let you clear it away. Go away and think. Then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, I may allow you to destroy it.”

- G.K. Chesterton
