I am so excited about the migration from X that I made a whole YouTube video about what it takes to run a social media company in a responsible way.
Don't worry, I will be back to covering the normal topics and the war in Ukraine next time.

The greatest trick the devil ever played was getting people to think he's a fool that's easily manipulated by others. I have no idea why this meme still persists after we've seen this dude evade major consequences for decades, shed supposed puppet masters like Steve Bannon and then win the presidency for a second time.

I got a sneak peak of IDFA’s opening night doc About a Hero which trained a LLM on Werner Herzog’s work. It wrote a true crime doc, they filmed a reenactment, cloned Herzog’s voice to narrate it, & featured experts. My convo w the creators on their process

"scientists don't care about technology and politics if they aren't on the fediverse" for absolute FUCK'S sake, yeah I'm going to log on after a long day of organizing a faculty undocumented student defense league, organizing geneticists doing vocal group pushbacks on scientific racism and then getting doxxed and harassed and threatened, being an expert witness about funding in public schools or vaccines & then threatened by the public, and like, learn about Linux or something

So, this needs to be said: two weeks ago something happened that made me proud to be Belgian. THREAD!

Here's the story. A friend – I will call her Caroline – got in touch after a silence of several years. We used to work together back in the day, and had become sort-of-friends. We had stayed in touch through a common friend, who, like me, lives in Brussels. Caroline herself, who lived in the US when we worked together, was now back to France.

Shoutout to @nlnet ❤️

I'm working on finalizing the @loops grant and once that is ready, I will be able to get paid for my development of #loops

Who makes bank? You, the fediverse.

Thanks to @nlnet, you will have a viable open source federated TikTok alternative.

So go remind your political representatives to support NGI/NLnet funding if you live in the EU!

Spread the word + please boosties 🚀

You all, this is the clearest and most accurate explanation on how to move from twitter to #Mastodon that I have seen in a while.👌

Please share it with all your friends who are still on Twitter:

I got to experience the rise of the nationalist and right-wing populist Swiss People's Party during my time living there. I saw them become the strongest party in 1999, then become the most powerful party in the National Council in 2007.

The party agitated for more restrictions on immigrants and against leftists and radicals to great success. Rates of naturalization peaked in 2006, despite significant and important rates of immigration, particular to urban areas of the country. It was and remains a challenging situation for many targeted communities.

I know a lot of European countries have experienced similar political shifts and I also suspect the second Trump administration will look at what's worked there and try to replicate it.

I confirmed my suspicions looking back at my old Twitter archive: engagement over there was always low compared to engagement here in the #fedi, even when I had more "followers" there. There's much more interaction here, particularly in the evenings. Likes, reposts and comments.

Just heard that the new Trump voters strongly overlap with those who own doge cryptocurrency (the cheapest one) who thought their "investment" would go to 0 with Harris and go to the moon with Elon. Which is why Elon was announced to be the head of DOGE: Dept Of Governance Efficiency

Let's suppose you have to teach C to 7yo kids.

Where do you start from?

How do you setup their playground?

(please, don't question the goal in this thread... let's focus on solutions)

Ferocious and brilliant. I really don't know how much post-mortems matter at this point. But if you think they do, read this one.

Dear friends, if today is hard and what your soul needs is a comfort-motivation-distraction, if you want to listen to a thoughtful conversation about how we can value each other better and support each other more in tech, we just released a new Change, Technically episode with @sue

We discuss organizing around problems instead of sorting by tools, why education doesn't magically fix everything, and more. It's a long, gentle listen this time. ❤️

"My principle is always, if I may say so casually: You dance with those who are in the room. And that also applies to the future president of the US," Scholz said.

"I'm never naive, but I'm also a bit unflustered," he added.

[wish I were less flustered! Digital governance just changed a lot I suspect, but maybe not.]

@julian @msbernst I think in practice, the small increase in upfront nerves caused by the push to post was short-lived. Because commit offered a warrant/justification for posting, people felt more comfortable in the act of posting and had the expectation of being supported/responded to by the rest of the group.
