Visual cortex is affected by sounds. Does this mean it is multisensory? Does it represent sounds?
Today in Nature #Neuroscience (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41593-022-01227-x) Célian Bimbard and team find otherwise.
Sound-evoked activity in visual cortex was similar across neurons. Even neurons in hippocampus. It persisted after we cut fibers from auditory cortex!
This activity was predicted by… subtle body movements evoked by the sounds. It reflects brainwide state and behavior signals.

Our work on post-encoding memory reactivation is finally out in @JOCN_Journal@twitter.com: http://direct.mit.edu/jocn/article-abstract/doi/10.1162/jocn_a_01934/113587/Post-encoding-Reactivation-Is-Related-to-Learning/
A huge thanks to all my co-authers: Xavi, @aya_benya@twitter.com, @BStaresina@twitter.com and @llfuentemilla@twitter.com, and also the reviewers who helped improve the paper to its final format!
@neurrito Thanks! Using Blender really opens up a whole new range of possibilities for scicom. When I started using it I had no experience with 3D animation. It took a few weekends to get into it, but def worth the effort, it's so much fun!
For reference, the average low temperature for Cambridge (UK) in January is ~2C and happens around 6-7 AM. We are 11 degrees Celsius above the average minimum temperature.

What will happen if we’ll RETHINK our street corners?
We'll realize that until now, we've made them too car-centric. Street corners are designed for fast driving, which means pedestrians have to risk their safety just to cross the street.
But if we’ll rethink our street corners we’ll get
■ More space for pedestrians
■ Shorter crossing distance and time
■ Greener spaces
■ Safer Streets
■ Beautiful street corners

Inkscape 1.2 highlight 💡 of the week:
Have you already explored the new marker controls in #Inkscape 1.2?

It's been great meeting with postdocs about the faculty position application process! Put together some collected thoughts on the process here. Main thing I've noticed: work on describing your research and *why it's important*. Concrete examples within.

@akundaje Thank you for sharing this, I find it very useful!
What's the carbon footprint of a Christmas tree? I don't know, but for those lucky enough to have a garden there is a carbon-negative alternative: a living Christmas tree!
A few years ago I planted a tiny Tannenbaum which has been eagerly growing ever since. For a few days every year It seems to enjoy the outfit.
Inhibition of synaptic transmission by blocking postsynaptic receptors results in the homeostatic plasticity, whereby enhanced transmitter release at the presynaptic terminal occurs over a fairly rapid time course without involving gene expression. This study elucidates the intracellular signaling cascade at the presynaptic terminal.
@brendonowicz Thanks! Excellent question.. If that input from the amygdala (via direct or indirect connections) triggers an action potential burst, and DA is present then this could trigger this type of plasticity. We have shown it only for the hippocampus, but it may well also work like that in other brain areas..
@albertcardona Thanks, Albert, very happy you enjoyed the video. Blender really is an amazing tool providing a wide range of possibilities for all sorts of scicomm!
(3/3) Based on this finding we formulated a new learning rule and found that it adds specificity to reinforcement learning by controlling memory allocation in the #network.
(2/3) The video abstract shows what we think happens (rather than how it happens). We found that burst + dopamine acts on a molecular coincidence
detector AC1/8. To find out more about the underlying signalling pathway please read our paper
https://elifesciences.org/articles/81071
(1/3) Neuronal reactivation and replay in the #hippocampus is important for #learning and #memory. So does reactivation induce or modulate synaptic plasticity? We think it does! This is a video abstract made with #blender of our recent paper in #elife.

Welcome new Twitter migrators!
Somewhat new myself. Some insights you might appreciate:
➡️ It only appears “dead” here as long as you don’t follow a couple hundred people. Just follow, follow, follow… you can later be more selective!
➡️ There is no “algorithm” deciding what you see, so you need to boost toots to give them traction.
➡️ “Liking” is less of a thing here, so don’t be discouraged.
➡️ Ppl describe the content of attached images. I love this! It gives extra depth to your toot! See 👇👇👇

We are now higher than last week's rate. Mastodon is managing this surge so far. Some servers are lagging. Please be patient as systems administrators manage the situation. It may get worse given the Twitter news.
