@janl isn't JS the language LLM's are about the best at?

it seems the ai boosters really dislike to be reminded that openai and anthropic are working very closely with the concentration camp administrators.

I still can't even that my now nearly 80 year old mom has been on Fedora on a thinkpad e520 (2011) for a decade and it all just works.

I checked her laptop just now and it's fully up to date on fedora 43, so she's done like 20 version upgrades autonomously too. The battery has degraded a little but the whole thing still works fine and she's very happy with it.

This is how things should be, this is peak computing tbh.

@cy I read about one such outcome in India as well, maybe 20 years ago.
@GhostOnTheHalfShell

@mathias Call it "C." or "C+" or something. Use very C-like semantics but a totally different meaning. Braces for comments or something. Get it so the markov model can't separate it from 50 years of C documentation.

I often think that there will be an equilibrium reached in the end, for all tech, and like always, people will say: "see, the nay-sayers weren't right." But actually the nay-sayers managed to shift the balance until it was more or less all-right. And sometimes the fight takes decades. And sometimes the balance is distributed unevenly. But the important thing is this: Just because the world is not going to turn the way I want, that doesn't mean I have to shut up. My voice is part of what makes up public opinion.

Anyway, that's how I feel on a good day.

It’s pretty weird, not to mention hilarious, that when a true fourth generation programming language finally arrived, it was Markdown.

@ramin_hal9001 I recall reading that people choose external methods instead of hot code reloads (which probably suits a soft real-time system more).
@bokay

Scheme man pages? Yes!

https://github.com/schemedoc/manpages

The abundance of man pages is one of the reasons Perl is great. All the packages also serve as man pages!

I miss this aspect in all other programming languages.

@monstreline Instagram or Whatsapp seems mandatory for small business nowadays.

(ducks)

When you post things on Instagram, Facebook, and X, this is what they look like to people who don’t use those platforms.

@clemensprill Wouldn't that be nice? This person has done exactly what the business has asked them to do. By telling them that LLM-generated code is bad, I am doing what company does not want done. I'm the bad guy here.

@mauve
Are you saying they would have avoided including it into a model's training set to avoid making the model a derivative work? Is it possible to tell from their output if they did or didn't?
