A lot of things I see proposed as 'solutions' to our polycrisis are solutions in the sense that 'stop being poor' is a solution to having no money.

For example, solving climate change by prosecuting fossil fuel companies is a potential *outcome* of politically ending the power of fossil fuel companies. It's not in itself a way to end that power.

Most rock bands aren't formed by people who have a clear business plan ahead of time, so that's not very surprising.

Honestly, I'm not sure how many rock bands even formalise things to the point they can write an accounting report...

I know @Ruth_Mottram had a hashtag for exactly this, but I can't remember what it was now, hope she sees it!

My Deutsche Bahn train is now so delayed that the Swiss won’t let it in (the Swiss railways nowadays only let German trains in if they are on time. Yes that’s a thing. The passengers then get dumped at the Swiss border and take local (so on time) transport iamexpat.ch/expat-info/swiss-e

Make a checkpoint, set up a new simulation to continue from the checkpoint, play a video showing how you narrowly escape the earth on a spaceship to heroically continue the simulation, kille the current process and start the new one.

It's a lot of effort, but such is the reality of seminal work!

@mrundkvist
For particle physics the last ~30 years have seen a situation where theorists have very little data by which to judge if a theory is indeed better. Consequently there's a lot of "making more" in the hopes that something turns out to be better later.

My impression is that the humanities are seduced by the immediacy of their subject to explain more details than the data can support, and so are endlessly fighting inconsistencies (well, the economists are making some progress on collective behaviour but they largely trade away the humanity from the picture).

A few months ago I made a network map showing the high speed rail connections in #France. Unfortunately, the official #SNCF #TGV map only shows the stops and whether there is a connection or not. However, I wanted to better understand which cities and regions are directly connected.
Voilà the 2024 update of my 🇫🇷 high speed rail map! Feel free to explore and boost!

Update on the status in Haiti from
Renata Segura of :

"CARICOM had requested Haitian political forces to send a proposal for creating a transitional government. They received 7 instead.

The meeting in Jamaica ended with white smoke of sorts: [the current president] oledged to resign, and a 7 member presidential council was created with representation from multiples parties (including Henry's). The council will chose a new prime minister.

This is a huge deal, as negotiations to form a new gvt has stalled for years. However, the immediate emergency is the security situation. Gang leader Chérizier said yesterday (before CARICOM's announcement) that Vin Ansanm would NOT recognise a new gvt resulting from [the meeting in] Jamaica.

The question is how to respond now to the security crisis. The Mission led by Kenya is preparing to deploy, but the biggest ? is if it will be able to arrive fast enough to prevent gangs from taking control of the entire capital."

“In a drastic attempt to protect their beachfront homes, residents in Salisbury, Massachusetts, invested $500,000 in a sand dune to defend against encroaching tides. After being completed last week, the barrier made from 14,000 tons of sand lasted just 72 hours before it was completely washed away”

Floristic homogenization of South Pacific islands commenced with human arrival.
Strandberg+

"using fossil pollen records from 15 sites on 13 islands within the biogeographical realm of Oceania ...
show that floristic homogenization has increased over the past 5,000 years ...when two islands were settled by people in a given time interval, their floristic similarity is greater than when one or neither of the islands were settled."

The myths of automation obscure the truth: AI relies on human labor, undervalued and precarious. Rather than replacing workers, tech shifts jobs to lower-income countries, deterring unionization. Time to rethink Silicon Valley ethics—and rhetoric. casilli.fr/2024/03/09/how-robo
