Just watched an interesting and very informative video over at mashable.com/video/hollywood-r about color grading movies to let the audience think they're in some exotic place. This technique brings out the stereotypes and is lately more seen as racistic. This is apparently also a very American thing to do.

@Pat I had to think of you when watching this video. I think you might find it interesting.

@trinsec That video was quite interesting but I can't help think that they are slightly exaggerating the harm of colour grading. I think there are far worse things like stereotyping and the unquestioning endorsement of US foreign policy in Hollywood movies. @Pat

@lydiaconwell I feel the video also covered that part a bit. It certainly is a tool that can aid in worsening the stereotyping and the like.

And I have the feeling you and @Pat would be able to have whole discussions about this, heh.

@trinsec I agree, the colour is used as part of the stereotyping. To me it just feels a little bit like missing the wider picture and focusing on just a small part - in a typical centrist fashion. @Pat

@lydiaconwell @trinsec

I've noticed that yellow/orange tint they often put in films when showing Mexico or the Middle East. Interesting that I've seen it used for locations in several Middle Eastern countries, but never in Israel.

Whenever Hollywood does something racist like that, there is usually some pretext that they use to hide intent. (At least when the technique is very noticeable like that.) In this case I’m sure they would say that it is meant to indicate a hot climate or something like that. But most people know it’s real purpose.

@Pat @trinsec Yeah, that's a more interesting take. Comparing countries with similar climates to see when the colour is used and when it isn't.

That video doesn't look at that part.

Also there's a bit where they take of photo of Stockholm or something and say, 'if we put a warm filter it looks Mediterranean.'

And I'm like, yeah sure, if you're ignorant and stupid, and completely ignore the Scandinavian style architecture ...
