I think one of the funnier parts of the Lords of the Rings is that when they tear down Isengard Saruman has stockpiles of the highest quality pipe weed.
Gandalf and the hobbits are supposed to represent common folk who enjoyed the simple things in life.
Saruman was Tolkien's snobbish peers at the University who looked down on commoners while secretly wanting to enjoy simple pleasures too. But always keeping it hidden and lying about it.
