A lotta folks are talking about a railroad strike in the US. This is part of a bigger wave in labor organizing and activism that began almost a year ago, and shows no signs of slowing down. Starbucks, Amazon, and Trader Joe’s have all seen a recent grassroots push to organize workers. Workers at Voodoo Donuts, Burgerville, New Seasons Market, and Afuri Ramen have launched independent union campaigns locally. Overworked nurses and teachers have gone on strike and picketed across the country.
For folks interested in learning more about the labor movement and class struggle in general, we have 17 titles in this category. We have new books like Fight Like Hell by @kimkelly, Class Struggle Unionism by Joe Burns, and Fighting Times by Jon Melrod who recently spoke at Powell’s Books in Portland (shout out to ILWU 5). @slider7420 I am not a vet, not even close. My dog, Moka, is about 13 or 14 (she came to us from a shelter about 11 years ago). Almost exactly a year ago she suddenly started to show similar symptoms as you describe, from one minute to the other. I was sire it was a stroke, but I was wrong. Back then, I had some really sad days. But she improved over a week or so. She is not the same as before, but she enjoys a (very slow) walk. With a medication called Karsivan she can also easily relax, where she was very nervous before. Large stairways no longer work for her, but she still enjoys her food as well as an occasional treat.
@Blaergh If you would like to avoid the nowadays unusual notation of Principia Mathematica, you could give #Metamath a try. For instance, 2p2e4, link is below, is the proof for 2+2=4. It allows you to track thos down to the axioms of set theory. As there are so many people trying to convince me that 2+2=5, this is an invaluable resource, IMHO.
@claasgefroi Wer ernsthaft glaubt, in der "freien" Wirtschaft herrsche Effizienz und Zweckrationalität, der hat dort sicher noch keine fünf Jahre gearbeitet ...
Oder anders gewendet: Wenn das, was in großen Unternehmen herrscht, der Goldstandard der Effizienz sein soll, dann blicke ich traurig dem nahen Ende der Gattung Homo Sapiens entgegen.

I’ve been watching all these tech layoffs in the states and although I think the industry will be fine I think it’s time for a reminder to join a union. You’ll never know when you need the help of your fellow bracket stuffers. I’m a member of Aotearoa Tech Union and although I’ve never needed their support it’s good to know it’s there.
This has been an eventful week in #Mannheim:
- A 48 hours #strike at Südkabel to re-inforce collective agreements of the #IGMetall; congratulations to the colleagues for their success (though it has come with a prize).
- A new collective agreement between #IGMetall and #SüdwestMetall. Here are the details (in German only, I'm afraid): https://www.bw.igm.de/news/meldung.html?id=104169. The result is quite controversial amongst #union members, but all in all I find it to be ok-ish.

Ende 2020 hat die Südkabel GmbH in #Mannheim den Arbeitgeberverband Südwestmetall verlassen und ist damit auch nicht mehr an den Flächentarif gebunden. Letzte Woche haben sich die KollegInnen in einer #Urabstimmung mit großer Mehrheit für einen #Streik entschieden. Ziel ist die erneute Anerkennung des Tarifvertrags. Ab morgen früh geht es los, Solidarisierung ist willkommen ...
@nellinelke Dazu kommt, dass in vielen unionsgeführten Ländern die Grünen an der Regierung beteiligt sind. Die müssen also die Ablehnung abgesegnet haben. Falls alle SPD-geführten zugestimmt haben sollten, dann muss auch BaWü gegen das Gesetz gestimmt haben ...

Just an oddity to end the evening. This white bird, photographed a week ago in our back yard, is a gold-crowned sparrow, like the other birds in the picture. It's a leucistic sparrow rather than an albino as it does have some coloration on its wings and the eyes are not pink.
We've seen it a couple times since, but we don't expect it will live long, as every predator in the area can see it from far away.
So a toast to all the white sparrows among us. May you escape notice when necessary.
