@osma on these test flights there was never any intention of recovering the wreckage. It was intentionally missions set out to collect data so that future launches could be made more efficient and sustainable.
Also, lack of harm to whales is part of the design considerations as they design these missions and present them to regulators for approvals!
@RealJournalism What in the world are you talking about?
@ScottLucas I have no idea what any of those outlets are saying.
However I do know what even left leaning discussions have been coming out on, and if you're telling me that Breitbart and Fox News and my left is friends are all in the same page that Biden was so unpresidential here, that really says something.
If Biden is able to unite people against himself from those far-flung corners of the population, well...
I don't have any way of taking it up with Time.
The best I can do is point out that they are not a reliable source, so hopefully people stop believing them when they put up stories that aren't quite accurate.
Yes, I hope journalism gets better someday. In the meantime, we need to point out to each other when reporters are getting the story wrong.
@Aethelstan personally, I think it is their fatal weakness. Just me personally, I hope they fail spectacularly and finally come to their senses and start facing reality.
That's just my personal opinion though. I think it's bad for even Democrats that Republicans have gone so far off track.
But also personally I'm afraid they might win anyway.
We'll see what happens.
@ScottLucas really? No the huge reaction to the state of the Union address was so negative because Biden focused so much on insults and spectacle.
The guy couldn't stop hurling insults at political detractors and talking about Trump over and over instead of talking about the issues.
That's the whole problem with the guy.
@drrjv it's so funny how you trumpet this centralized governmental approach while saying stop fascism.
These authoritarian moves are echoes of fascism.
@Kozmo That's not how his proposals would work out, though, as raising the cost of serving customers end up with the most vulnerable having to pay more for basic goods and services.
And those supposed cuts from the deficit are based on really funky accounting. They are not going to happen.
@RealJournalism Well that's not true, because that's not how US law works.
Biden has been very ineffective in promoting workable climate protections, but the decision to stay home doesn't mean all of the existing protections go out the window. The president doesn't have that power.
It's more, let's dump Biden to send a message that we need a president who will be more effective than this guy was.
I wouldn't say it's the result of living in a capitalist society.
It's the result of wanting things and needing a way to convince other people to give you their things because you want them.
That's not capitalism. That's just human nature.
@si_irini I hardly think this is the ideal world.
There's no ideal world to keep intact, because this is not ideal, there is no such thing.
@SteveThompson that wasn't the goal, though.
The goal of this test flight was to test a number of different operations, and it was a rousing success in general.
The ship was always planned to be lost. There was no plan for recovery because that wasn't the goal of this test.
To say the goal was a splashdown in the Indian Ocean is kind of misleading as to what the mission of this flight was.
@Wen obviously do you think that but, notably, you aren't saying why you think that.
I know that you're wrong. I know that the bitcoin protocols don't include anything even approaching the reporting of water usage, which, I mean that's nuts that it would, but that's a connection you're trying to make for some reason.
So I know you're wrong, and I'm inviting you to explain yourself, and if you don't feel like it, great!
@Wen No, I'm interested in hearing from you.
You say I missed something, so why not tell me what you think I missed.
I have an entire bookcase full of physics textbooks here, but what do YOU think?
@Lassielmr I think the best way to consider the SOTU speech is to ignore any sense of ideology or philosophy or statesmanship or anything like that.
The guy is having trouble in the polls among his own base, so he decided to use this giant platform to target specific audiences to try to win their favor, regardless of anything rational or realistic.
So he might be all of the things you list, but in this particular speech, none of that mattered he was just trying to pander to a particular group of voters, who themselves might be out of touch and all the rest 🙂
It was very unbecoming, very inappropriate for the event, but the people who would care about such things the most already won't vote for him no matter what.
@Wen Well then, enlighten me, Don't just say nah uh.
@Aethelstan but to me that's where the rank and file of the Republican party wants to go.
I CONSTANTLY hear Republican voters talking about loyalty, which is absolutely not my cup of tea, but that's the direction the party has gone. Folks like Nikki Haley, for example, were pummeled by both mainstream commentators and in discourse between common voters specifically because she was perceived as disloyal.
The us versus them, we're on a sports team, be loyal to the team sense is very strong in the party these days, so it's not surprising that party leadership would need to change to respond to that shift.
@Wen no.
Different people can use different amounts of water and electricity to do different amounts of work, so measuring work by those is disconnected.
In the context of Bitcoin the useful measure of work is probably operations per second, FLOPS.
If one really wants to measure work, that is. It's not a very useful thing to measure in this context.
I think @dajb knew it was an analogy. He was pointing out how problematic the analogy really is.
The idea that folks would treat the platform as sacred--and many do--absolutely brings up issues of inclusion and diversity and accessibility.
It's to project your personal opinions on the system and impose your perspective on others, demanding that they conform to your own values.
You worry about "I do whatever I want here" but the other side of the coin is "You don't do what I don't want you to do."
People leave corporate platforms to escape that sort of thing. It's shame to see it here, just with a different master.
I think the most pressing and fundamental problem of the day is that people lack a practically effective means of sorting out questions of fact in the larger world. We can hardly begin to discuss ways of addressing reality if we can't agree what reality even is, after all.
The institutions that have served this role in the past have dropped the ball, so the next best solution is talking to each other, particularly to those who disagree, to sort out conflicting claims.
Unfortunately, far too many actively oppose this, leaving all opposing claims untested. It's very regressive.
So that's my hobby, striving to understanding the arguments of all sides at least because it's interesting to see how mythologies are formed but also because maybe through that process we can all have our beliefs tested.
But if nothing else, social media platforms like this are chances to vent frustrations that on so many issues both sides are obviously wrong ;)
