@matthew_d_green The synthesis instructions for the easiest and safest weed killer, antibiotic and a couple other lifesaving drugs they could realistically make. So much of drug development is trial and error, that someone magically telling you where to look would have immediate effects even today. Some tips on how to grow better hybrid plants (they were already trying in 1900). One page on DNA, they can figure out the details.

@JoshuaACNewman Are dick pill scams still a thing? I don't remember seeing one in... ten years

Unfortunately I have to agree on the rest.

@jgeorge @NanoRaptor I find surprisingly little info on the Internet about that. How old are these things?

@NanoRaptor I have seen subminiature connectors for space stuff that are not THAT different...

@danluu
Is it possible that the old FPSs you're thinking about are predominantly PC games? Whereas the big games of today are mostly console-based and controller-first.

Also, yeah, I'll admit it: we're not getting any younger...

@bert_hubert ....Geert Wilders is still around?

I really hate this '00s revival we're having

@amberxorluci "Applied metaphysician" is almost exactly what was written on the door of Fuyutsuki's office in Evangelion

@bert_hubert I can't follow you on that: I did Pascal in high school - now I know all the issues and it was already ancient by then, but Borland TP7 will always be an object of nostalgia for me.

(I don't think I ever saw a more noob-friendly programming environment before the Arduino IDE)

@jschauma @SteveBellovin
Been there, in the late '90s, so already on the downslope.
It's the reason why I can't take seriously most of the takes about modern social media being uniquely bad for people: back then there was no "algorithm" and people behaved just the same.

@bert_hubert I hadn't heard of someone getting slashdotted in a long time...

@kkarhan @foone Well, Rust is all about safety and strict rule-checking, so this would be at odds with the general philosophy. We know how often compiler warnings are (not) read

@djm I didn't think this was meant to be realistic, I thought there would be no way to win. It's an interesting way to try and explain the problems with moderation.

I groaned at the Top Mod joke though...

I didn't think you could win this thing: I assumed it was like Space Invaders, and it would get faster and faster until you invariably fail...
