According to the daily mail the new trump social media site was hacked and fake profiles created

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1

if this is based on Mastodon, is this an older version or are there some genuine security concerns here that can affect other instances.

@zleap Hacked is a very strong word. The dude literally just typed in the standard signup link which had been removed from the main page... Its not hacking, its stupidity on the site maintainers part, nothing more.

@freemo Thought so, typical daily mail reporting shows how totally clueless they are with regard to technology. Poor reporting too.

@zleap yea very true, and often true of most mainstream media honestly.

@freemo Which is what worries me, they report what they don't understand so badly what sort of image are they going to pant of the fediverse. ?

@zleap Or they just set up the server poorly and it has nothing to do with Mastodon

@matrix +1 however it is always worth asking these questions, as if this was due to a problem the community can fix it.

Article suggests mastodon is vulnerable, so reputational damage needs to be limited.

As I said to @freemo just poor reporting and technology knowledge.

@zleap From what I understand the journo reporting on this was just an idiot who thinks registering an account on a web site with open registrations is "hacking". Never trust a journo when it comes to "hacking" - otherwise, you end up believing that hackers can shoot up steroids that enable them to blow up minivans with their minds.

@Alex Indeed, sadly people who read that who are not clued up just take it as the truth. The daily mail are good at sensationalism,
