why do people need degrees

Depends you need a degree to go in to medicine or teachig
for others it is something to aim for to achieve a degree requires hard work and commitment to studying,k the reward is the degree
Depends on the person and their motivatin.
I think perhaps courses cover quite a lot more than just programming, lots of theory perhaps legal issues.
People seem to be leaving college not employment ready too,

Yeah, I would say it depends to a large degree on the area of study. I definitely wouldn't entrust my health to a doctor who didn't have a degree in medicine, but if we're talking about something like programming, I don't think it makes a difference if you went to college or were self-taught.
