Lots of people were upset by a recent NY Times article that said alcohol isn't healthy. I'm sorry to report that this is not news: the reason you thought a glass of red wine was good for your heart is because of the booze industry buying bad science skepchick.org/2023/01/sorry-to

@rebeccawatson

I did get the impression that red wine in moderation was good for you as it has anti oxidants. Like anything, it is good in moderation, but too much is not good for our health.

@zleap Nope. It's good in that it trains your body to deal with alcohol. Like one of the Roman emperors, I forget which one, who took a daily dose of arsenic to train his body to deal with possible attempts of food poisoning with arsenic.

@zleap I'm not sure. If only I could remember who this particular emperor was! But perhaps it was standard practice.

@Magdeleen @zleap It's been said in many contexts. It has also been said that once you've acquired arsenic tolerance you get indigestion or worse if you abruptly stop taking it. I don't know if that's true and I can't find a source off the cuff.

It seems the first well-known arsenic microdoser was en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mithrida… of Pontus, Anatolia, 135–63 BC.

@clacke Thank you, he was also mentioned by another tooter (if that's the word) here. Look for it, comes with cool picture and fun fact!

@Magdeleen @zleap That was Mithridates - he supposedly developed tolerance to common poisons by taking small doses on a regular basis. When he tried to commit suicide by poisoning himself - he failed, because of his tolerance.

Fun fact - I was born and raised at the foot of Mount Mithridat, located in Kerch (Crimea), where he ruled during Roman times...

I used to run up and down these steps as a kid in the summer.

@hu_logic @zleap I'll try and remember that name, thank you! And what a brilliant story! That's a very special place to grow up next to. 😃

@hu_logic @Magdeleen @zleap Research funded by Otis Corp found that taking an elevator in lieu of running up those stairs would have been healthier.

Cigarettes are good for kids

😂 😂 😂

@hu_logic @mauiluvr @Magdeleen

This could be reverse psycology by telling kids fruit and veg is good for em, they don't eat, so by telling them Cigarettes are good for kids it may have the same effect, now if we just tell kids fruit and veg are bad, they will start eating healty food.

@zleap @mauiluvr @Magdeleen I have kids, that shit don't work on them either way. They just do whatever dafuq they want to do.

@zleap >as it has anti oxidants.
I'm not aware of any studies that have conclusively proven that anti-oxidants alone are good for you.
I remember hearing about some study (from a reliable source) about smokers that were given anti-oxidant supplements ended up with worse health outcomes from the death sticks compared to the control group.

If you want anti-oxidants, you're better off eating the red grapes alongside vegetables, instead of drinking rotted grapes that have partially turned into a strong neurotoxin.

You really only should be drinking water - any other drink is unhealthy, as no fun is allowed.

@Suiseiseki

Fair points there, it does show that the media can over hype things, or report things badly and without sources it is impossible to read where they got their information usually.
