Indeed, but Twitter is owned by a WHITE American. A WHITE American who endorses the far right, and wants the far right AfD to win the German elections.
@zleap @GossiTheDog It’s owned by a white *South African*
Ok sorry, I stand corrected then
@zleap @GossiTheDog There are plenty of evil white American oligarchs. But Musk and Peter Thiel being white South Africans who long for apartheid…it explains a lot.
@GossiTheDog Anyone know why the Chinese version of tiktok encourages kids to learn to play an instrument while the American version encourages them to destroy school bathrooms?
I think in China they value education, parents value education and teach their kids to do the same, they also teach their kids respect.
Perhaps one of the reasons China brought in controls to limit how long kids can do gaming or social media for, to the west this is because china is seen as oppressive, but maybe the Chinese government also recognise how gaming and social media impact heath and education etc.
This is just an idea, so needs some sort of citations etc.
@zleap @kneoghau @GossiTheDog >> I think in China they value education, parents value education and teach their kids to do the same, they also teach their kids respect.
They have social media age restriction laws in China that compel Douyin to limit its content for younger users.
Have you ever set parental controls on your child’s devices? It’s basically the same thing.

Good poimt, I think it will be interesting to see what happens with this too.
All porn sites must 'robustly' verify UK user ages by July
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwye3qw7gv7o
We perhaps need to go back to some basics of teaching respect for self and also others.
@MisuseCase @kneoghau @GossiTheDog
hmm, it will be interesting how this will be enforced by OfCOM.
Given that, with water and sewage
Government has broken the law on sewage, says watchdog
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4g38drwmrlo
Unless Ofcom enforce the rules properly and robustly then there won't be the same level of fear as there is in the US.
@MisuseCase @kneoghau @GossiTheDog
Indeed, in fact I think back in 2023, there was a company who sued the government as they spent a lot of money developing a solution that was no longer needed, due to the way the government handles things (as in badly).
'Porn block' companies seek £3m in damages

@zleap @kneoghau @GossiTheDog There is another dimension to this which is: creating the need for age verification/collecting and storing sensitive information on users and what sites they visit is the entire point.
It’s a new business opportunity! Someone will make money helping sites comply with this law.
1/2
@zleap @kneoghau @GossiTheDog Of course the “someone” may be lax when it comes to securing the sensitive personal information they collect.
And/or they may be using it for other things they’re not telling users about, because everyone does that these days.

@MisuseCase @kneoghau @GossiTheDog
The GDPR should protect people against misuse of data, as for lack of security and data breaches, the GDPR covers that, but it is too late if there is a data breach.
I can see it being a recipe for disaster given how lax security is or can be.
@zleap @kneoghau @GossiTheDog The thing about GDPR is that it curtails data collection by private companies but if governments want to enact pervasive surveillance? That’s totally okay apparently.
@MisuseCase @kneoghau @GossiTheDog
Or in the case of Grooming gangs, hold endless inquiries that will conclude with the bleeding obvions that most normal people could tell them in a few minutes.
@zleap @kneoghau @GossiTheDog Yeah the “grooming gangs” business seems both prurient and like a “crimes of the [ethnic group]” propaganda circus.
@MisuseCase@twit.social @kneoghau@mastodon.social @GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social
We know who was invovled, it was the fact that social services, the police didn't want take action as they were scared of being called racist. They blamed victims, which statutory guidence says NOT to do. It was a total screw up from top to bottom and noone was held accountable.

@zleap @kneoghau @GossiTheDog Ofcom (and the UK government in general) doesn’t really care about the feasibility or trade-offs. They want to score political points or want tech companies and content providers to wave a magic wand and make it work.
