Holy moly. I thought this platform was supposed to be the anti nazi opponent? Within 2 hours of signing up- 4 clicks into a #- I’m confronted with an extreme vocal white supremacy tooter. A barrage of anti otherist-whites are under attack- type toots. This is just part of one example. Frankly I’m shocked.
What is the mastodon etiquette of what is/isn’t allowed? What sort of things warrent reporting? I see the report option is there, but I don’t want to faux par on my first day here.

@freemo ah yes that makes sense. I wouldn’t want to bubble myself actively, but also want to keep on top of my mental health, so I’ll be more alert where a post originated from and block accordingly. Thanks again!

@ErikaDesign Make sure you block the server and not the user if that is your intention. There are only about a dozen or so servers, and not very big ones, that have that sort of content.

The problem is that unless you click “show more” it just shows the post content not the comment. Anyway I’ll re-follow you. I take it you’ve worked out how to report this? My efforts to find an ethical facebook are doomed. They all seem unworkable techie havens or full of racist conspiracy nuts. Or both

From what I’ve learned so far: different instances/servers have different rules. There are unfortunately a handful instances that are openly nazi. But most are not/ including this one we are on. You can block individuals, but you can also block an entire server(although I don’t know how yet)
Also taking initiative to shield your own posts for others depending content is encouraged as to not upset the timeline.

I have read your posts above and you have been learning quite fast, well done.
To Block a Whole Instance :
1. find a post from any user with an account there.
2. click on the users name, and it will take you to their profile page.
3. At the top, right corner, you will find a dots menu "..."
4. select that, and one of the options is to "Hide everything from instance.name" --- this is the one you want if Blocking their instance is the goal.
A quick screenshot (with an innocuous account, just for show and tell) is attached.
Have fun you won't see their posts anymore.

I would suggest doing some reading -- things will make mroe sense and you will feel more comfortable using Mastodon then.

@ErikaDesign Mastodon isnt really anti-nazi, though QOTO (this server) is, in the sense we have no people like that locally.
Mastodon is about each server being able to set whatever rules they want for themselves. Each server can also decide which other server they wish to federate with.
The idea is that because you as a user can block whole servers, not just people, it is easy for you to create the type of world you want. If you mute all the pro-nazi servers (there really arent very many) then you will not see nazis anymore. This is different than say twitter where you'd have to block each person individually and not really get anywhere on the whole.
