I guess I should do an introduction... I joined Mastodon way back when Twitter imploded (not that I was on Twitter, but it seemed like the place to be), but really didn't figure it out. Now that Reddit's imploding, I'm gonna give it a real shot. I read that it's only polite to do an intro so here I am.

I go by Krispy in every place except work, I'm 36, married, with a dog, two cats, and two snakes. I don't have kids and do not plan to. I have a variety of hobbies, some outdoor (biking, disc golf, birdwatching, etc), some more sedentary (video games, board games, reading, etc), some creative (miniature painting, fountain pen/handwriting, TTRPGs), and some consumptive (tea, baking)... I'm probably missing some.

I love animals/wildlife/ecology. I got my Masters in wildlife parasitology and though I don't use that in my career, I've kept that curiosity and interest. I'm obsessed with paleontology and obscure animals.

I love stories, mostly fantasy, sci fi, mystery/thriller, romance, in virtually any medium. I'm currently playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, reading Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan, listening to A Little Hatred by Joe Abercrombie, and watching Drag me to Dinner.

I have a strong science background and believe in questioning everything, but with the understanding that I can't know everything and much in life is unintuitive, so something not making sense to me does not mean it's wrong.

I have no idea how to find people to follow, so if anyone makes it to the end of this and thinks I seem interesting enough to follow, I'll follow you back... I'll start there.

@Krispyz Welcome! We have a lot in common, but it's especially nice to see someone else into mini painting!

@kessleragain Thank you! I haven't picked up my brush in a couple months, but I loved playing with painted minis!

@crcollins I have a 7 year old Corn Snake and a 14 year old Colombian Rainbow Boa!

@Krispyz

Beautiful. 😁 I love snakes. I've worked with a few, though it's been years.

@Krispyz I’m new here to, for similar reasons. One thing I think I learned is that it’s a good idea to put stuff in your profile, empty profiles are often ignored I guess. And potentially also good to pin your introduction post. Welcome though. I just started following hashtags and that can be interesting.

@zakatak thank you, I didn't know about pinning. I will do that!

@Krispyz You’ll probably want to edit this from #d&d to #dnd. Hashtags have to be letters, not punctuation, it seems.

@Krispyz
*waves* Welcome! 🚲 🧁 :a_bike_frog:

For the naturalist and dino stuff you might check the local feeds for flipping.rocks, ecoevo.social, and sauropods.win .

For biking a lot of people use #BikeTooter as the hashtag. #CarryShitOlympics is also fun (moving large/unwieldy items by bike).

The #Baking people are all friendly (there is also #mastonom)

#Caturday gets used every day, #DogsOfMastodon is also popular.

#Bookstodon can get very chatty if you ask for recs

@Krispyz Welcome to the jungle! Another tip is to go through your new followers' lists and see if you are interested in anyone they follow. I follow a lot of scientists and space enthusiasts. I found that when you get up to about 100 accounts that you are following, your feed starts to get useful and interesting. Also use mute and block liberally and don't feel bad about it. You really need to trim your feed to match your personality (sort of a social media Bonsai tree).

@Krispyz
Welcome to Mastodon! Quick question: out of your 5 pets, whos the cutest?

@Krispyz Welcome to the Fediverse. That's a nice lot of hobbies there. :)

@Krispyz always happy to follow someone with a science background and a questioning mind.

(I’m in a verrrrry different world so if you follow me for my rare posts, I make no promises)

@Krispyz
Welcome!

Some unsolicited advice if I may though. Many vision impaired users here rely on screen readers which struggle to properly pronounce lowercase hashtags when reading toots. Many users here revert to #CamelCase so that readers "speak" them correctly.

Thankfully Masto has an edit function if you do want to adjust the tags to make it easier for BVI (Blind/Visually Impaired) users to find you, it's easily done.

@aaronIsHere Can do! If it lets me edit. I tried last night to fix the d&d one and I got an error, but I will try again!

@Krispyz
I'm sorry to sound like a nag, there never seems to be an easy way to impart that advice without sounding like a moaner... I promise I'm happy to have you here really 😅

@Krispyz welcome! I joined here to find like minded people who love animals and science and technology. My wife and I love animals but don't have children either. Not sure that we ever will either.

Zelda is old school! I'm a '90s kid so I was big into RPG games back in the day, like Zelda, Chrono Trigger, all the FF games, and Breath of Fire. I will give you a follow!
