I asked this on another thread, and I’m truly curious.
What is the national security threat to the owners of TikTok having my contacts and other social media information? Can anyone help me understand the national security issue on this?
Is it just because the Chinese will spam my contacts with propaganda? Will they try to get my contacts to buy cheap Chinese stuff they don’t need in the first place? I really think this is super hyperventilated, hair on fire, nothing burger. Help me understand if I’m wrong on this.
I can see the government security concern.
@SpinozasHeresy They'll send balloons to your friends. Very serious....
@SpinozasHeresy Let's exclude government-owned devices that could be in sensitive areas, One risk is that a 20 year old's compromising video will be used later for blackmail. The solution? Well, the joke about a French ambassador visited by a KGB agent with compromising photos with their agent Olga. He goes through them a couple of times, says, "i will take this, and this, and this", hands the rest back, and shrugs his shoulders. Blackmail doesn't work if nobody cares.
@SpinozasHeresy For government devices I can see this as a security threat. For the rest it's just a potential invasion on your privacy and your braincells.
