the reason why the cabin of an airplane is darkened during taking off and landing is to reduce the amount of time to get out of the vehicle during an emergency. Since it takes some time for the eyes to adjust to the dim environment. Further the landing and taking off portion of the flight are the most dangerous. Thus, in the case of an emergency, every second counts.

Now the question is with us having access to blue light devices, if we are negating the well meant precautions. Also it is not forbidden to use the overhead lamp to continue reading.

@barefootstache really? love learning stuff like this--knowing there are folks that have thought thru the such emergency scenarios.
re the glasses and reading lights, the exceptions aren't a problem if the measures work in favor of staging lives in aggregate. plus that has to be weighed against upsetting travelers

@2ck in the airplane industry there is a saying that "rules are written in blood". Meaning that after an accident/emergency had occurred, they try to reduce the amount of casualties next time.

So this one was an after thought. Similarly that is why the window blinds need to be open also by landing and taking off.
