🔴 ❓ 📚 I am considering starting a blog where I will post reviews of books that I have read. Do you think the endeavour is advisable? If the answer to that question is yes, what platform do you think is the best to use?

@bibliolater @bookstodon I've done this for years, I love it! Mainly it is for me, but I quite often refer colleagues to specific reviews for work related things or common interests. Traffic is pretty low, and I make no money off it but I haven't really tried ianhopkinson.org.uk/

@ianhopkinson @bookstodon Thank you for commenting. Apart from the Wordpress hosting price are there any other associated costs?

@bibliolater @bookstodon domain name registration I think is about £10 and I might have paid for an SSL certificate - you can probably get all three things as a single package.

@bibliolater @ianhopkinson @bookstodon if you don't have specific requirements for wordpress, you might consider ghost.org/pricing/
It's where some people moved from substack, and wordpress parent company generated a lot of controversy recently. And both are possible to self-host, if you want.

@bibliolater @bookstodon Today I think the best shot would be Substack. Don’t think it will be unique, blogs are always of most value to myself, but it is a good way to train your intellect.

@geirertzgaard @bookstodon One of the motives that I have for starting a blog about the books that I have read is to solidify my understanding of themes and help to retain the information that I have previously read.

@bibliolater Considering you are already on the fediverse and possibly care about open software and federation, maybe writefreely?

writefreely.org/instances

@holothuroid Thank for this suggestion. After looking at a few different instances 'wordsmith.social' took my fancy unfortunately registration is currently closed.
