Had an idea, controversial, but what you all think?

project idea : Sniper Week

contents : posts all over the place, open to Fediverse, and tagged with a proper tag (to be decided).

* bio of famous snipers.
* cool arms used
* written materials (I have a German Snipers training manual, WWII vintage)
* photos, links to videos on different places.

And all done in the interest of , and general .

Without attitude. Without offending anyone, hopefully. CW if needed.

Thoughts? Thank you!

@design_RG I think this would be a lot of fun. There is a lot of history and knowledge that a lot of the world just dont know about guns and war and history partly due to the aversion to guns many people hold. Even I dont consider myself an expert and have a lot to learn.

I often say a lot of the controversy about guns is made much worse by the ignorance about it. So learning would allow both sides to have more productive debates on it. While I wouldnt want to see Sniper Week become too political I think the knowledge people learn from such an event would really help carry into other discussions.

@freemo Exactly -- well said.

I don't want the crazies militia types around it -- and will make it clear that I WON'T even see their posts, in most cases, because I personally block some of the controversial instances in this account.

Curated content, is the idea, while open to participation and commentary. For learning, for all.

I was thinking about this the other day -- and I think I can articulate a moral justification on why being a sniper in war can be more acceptable than killing lower rank soldiery.

One shot, one kill. Priority target - the opposition leadership and command. Remove those and their force could greatly drop resistance and end a conflict.

Some great films, I loved "Enemy at the Gates" for example. Also, "Saving Private Ryan".

Culture, History, Geography (wind direction, speed affect trajectories - and we are aiming LONG shot).

An elite Canadian Sniper hit a target cleanly - at over 4,000 meters. That's 2.5 miles for US folks. Wind effect, gravty, all had to be accounted for. Even a .50 powerful cartridge's bullet will curve on a long trajectory.

I believe that is the current world record for distance, with a single shot.

@design_RG Whether snipers are morally justified or not I dont think I'd want to see sniper week glorifying war or snipers. Knowledge is power, my hope would be its about knowledge and not about cheering on snipers :)

@freemo We could decide as a staff team.

Would it be appropriate here? Or if not, it can be taken elsewhere, in case there's interest.

No macho bragging, chest thumping, that kind of primal behaviour.

I am pretty much a Cat, Lone Wolf type, and have though that in a mil conflict the sniper role would suit me perfectly.

@design_RG Well thing is our policies at QOTO generally dont allow us to tone police too much. Of course there is a point where it would be outright rude and attacking and we are going to speak up. But if a topic tends to promote a abrasive atmosphere we may have limited ability as mods to stop it.

But I would say if the topic starts to generate an undesirable environment we just stop promoting the topic and it should die on its own.

@design_RG It would be fun to do science themes each week. Have the community vote on a topic for the next week and then spend that week posting on the given topic.

@freemo That is indeed nice, but it would depend on someone taking the lead, and becoming a Content creator - it's more work than being a passive observer, one click here and there as many people prefer.

This is not TV of course, and some of us ARE active Content Creators. I an take on a project, if I am interested in the theme, personally, to put the time and effort into it.

But your suggestion, of a STEM focused one, could take rotating Leaders as the week's coordinators; so that no one burns out (thinking about me, here, already stretched thin)

We can work on that suggestion, yes.

But for now, I would like to see if Sniper Week draws some response fire. LOL...

@design_RG Yea, unless the community is active enough to all generate content collectively it would likely require one leader each week to make sure we get the momentum.

Perhaps each week people are welcome to propose topics, and those who propose the topics also accept the task of leading the topic for that week (it can be anyone). If we dont get a leader for one week then that week doesnt have a topic I guess.

@freemo That all sounds good -- we are building the idea.

😄 Soon to be consolidated on a Discourse Forum topic, so all bits and pieces can be sequenced and available for reference.

Yep, I like it. Wish we had the Thread Splitting in Mastodon, so we could part this side discussion off the other topic idea. But this is great for the site, I like it and will help.

@design_RG I don't know a word about snipers but it sounds interesting. And I definitely would like to take a look at that WWII manual

@miguel31416 Awesome. If the staff is ok with this idea, and there's some interest, I will run and lead it.
