* On Why we need Rich Text formatting in Mastodon *

Short post, as an image can be quite expressive.

One image, two links. Same content. Take your pick, what's best?

1. OP in mastodon : qoto.org/@design_RG/1042520204

2. Forum post : discourse.qoto.org/t/qoto-mast

(which would look identical at a GlitchSoc or Pleroma instance too, if desired)

@design_RG Wow, that's exciting. Pleroma has markdown support, but sadly federated posts at mastodon side are just plain text.

@acme Yes, that's the current status on Mastodon -- they are slower than some of the other projects.

GlitchSocial already supports it too, and equally as well as Pleroma. So it's not hard to get it into mainstream Mastodon, it just needs to get the attention and nod of approval from the lead developers.

GlitchSoc's source code is open, and this could be back-ported without much hassle, I would imagine.

Here at Qoto we added a GS feature -- Local Instance Only, non-federating toots, and it was ported by another masto admin, from GS source. For us, using his patch made it doable for Qoto as well.

In the mean time, I use MarkDown in posts -- which will display Full Formatting in some instances, and the sad, old plain Jane plain text in mastodon instances. Best we can do for now. 😃
