* Screenshots of Alternative Pleroma Front Ends

1 and 2 : SoapBox FE, by Alex Gleason, a project still in progress but can be seen and tested already at some places. Light and Dark modes shown. jaeger.website/

3 : BloatFE running on Expired.Mentality.RIP instance, one of the 3 front ends supported there.

Thanks to @igel and @a1batross for the service.

@igel @design_RG @a1batross

This is quite interesting. Reactions. Facebook users will feel right at home.

The system feels light and fast -- Pleroma engine in machine room doing it's usual great work, and some inovative Front end ideas in Soap Box.

Thanks @igel for the service. I am preparing a new blog post about Pleroma Instance recommendations and should mention your site.

@yann @a1batross @igel

Call me impressed that my brand new account avatar is already seen here at qoto; while my FAB one took ages to federate. Neat.

@design_RG @igel @a1batross curious that expired mentality isn't locked to operate only its own instance :cirnoThink:
@roka @design_RG @igel no, I've hosted it because @r@freesoftwareextremist.net's server was operating too slow for me. He is developer btw.

@a1batross

That is actually an intriguing layout -- way better than mastodon for example. Uses my wide display 100%.

@r @igel @roka

@a1batross @design_RG @igel @r eh, I meant that switch in config that removes the part asking you for instance address and instead dumping you to a specific one's oauth screen

@a1batross

Kudos for leaving it unlocked and allowing people to experiment BloatFE. Well done.

And curious reporter that I am, taking screenshots and mental notes as I look around, push the buttons, try things.

Attachments :

1. Home screen and the simplest display of Feeds I have ever seen.

2. Composing a Reply (this one) looks like this. Again - very readable, very usable.

The SoapBox FE seems to have huge potential for new users. Congrats to Alex G.

Collecting more screenshots, project has been upgraded to a full Blog Post for SoapBox FE.

Deserved, and I think it will do really well -- the simplicity of the interface, controls, posting and replying will win over any newcomer.

Eugen should pay attention!

#FediReporter on the beat.
@sander @a1batross @design_RG I like its look a lot. But it still needs some features to be comfier than pleromaFE. Like, being able to crop avatars and displaying mp3 correctly
Yes exactly. It's getting a nice shape now and Alex is working hard to add new features 😄

@igel @a1batross @design_RG

@sander

You were probably asking igel, as sys admin, but I have been posting my new observer impressions with my alt account there -- @yann@jaegger.website in this thread too.

Much impressed. Lots of great ideas on simplifying complex things Fedi has, make them much easier for new people.

@igel @a1batross

@design_RG

Thanks for your input, yes I think you're right. The fedi is hard enough as it is for new people joining

@igel @a1batross

@sander

Opinions, noses, everybody has one. It looks "Beta", I will concede, but has potential.

@igel @a1batross

@icedquinn

LOL, yeah -- Bloat has wonderful use of the wide display in my laptop (something I highly prize!) but indeed looks like a Beta version still.

Soapbox FE is more polished and has a big focus on making things simpler, a big help for its potential users. I think it will be quite successful as an alternative FE -- and could come to Mastodon too someday.

@a1batross @igel

@design_RG @a1batross @igel i'd rather fill the space with tiles or columns than just stretch the words out. there's typographical reasons newspapers still use columns and books are thicker rather than wider.

but if that's your thing you can use stylish to rip the width off any of the websites you frequent https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/ :blobcatscience:

@icedquinn

Thank you for the suggestion, I will check it out. I have been using an enhanced wide screen layout that I really enjoyed. But it's true that simply going for very wide panels is not ideal.

I created a topic describing it, and sent a suggestion to the Glitch-Social team, who might chose to implement it maybe.

The Toots display in Bloat FE is indeed too wide.
