Windows really has gone downhill!

While my laptop is away being repaired, I got a rental laptop. I asked for a machine just to if I'm missing out on some latest flashy advances in proprietary land, having been on for many years now.

And I can't believe this is the world's primary OS! It's a buggy, unintuitive mess (and this is coming from someone who used Windows for 10+ years) where the only "advance" seems to have been in being ever more intrusive and taking more and more control away from the user.

I'm someone who argued fifteen years ago against Linux fanatics who wanted to pretend was a viable replacement for the average user for . As much of a enthusiast as I am, that simple wasn't true at the time - Windows was a much smoother experience in general than Linux.

Today though, I can confidently recommend a major Linux distro and know that they'll have as smooth an experience as they would on Windows. Not (just) because Linux has improved by leaps and bounds, but also because Microsoft seem to be doing a great job driving Windows to the ground.

@digital_carver Yea, I jumped ship when #Windows10 update said I had to do a clean install but #Windows11 is a buggy, data-harvesting, #privacy invading mess.

#Linux #Mint is pretty smooth but definitely has rough edges that take some #tech knowhow to resolve. Challenging to use when you have to run #Microsoft #Teams without #Chrome, SMB shares, #Adobe CC, and #MakeMusic products for work. I do okay but others in my office wouldn't want to put in the effort.

We're soooo close. Let's go!

@DanielMReck @digital_carver have you taken a look at Ubuntu Studio @ubuntustudio ? Really fantastic for media. Low latency kernel and KDE Plasma DE distinguish it from regular Ubuntu. Useful apps pre-installed too.

@jpgaubier @digital_carver @ubuntustudio I have. Unfortunately awesome #FOSS apps like #darktable do not yet provide feature parity with #Adobe #Lightroom. I need #InDesign and #Photoshop for clients, so a #Windows11 VM is still required.

I've started using #MuseScore for my own engraving and it is close to meeting #Finale but I still need Finale for industry compatibility. I'm moving toward replacing #Premiere with #DaVinciStudio, though.

Sadly lots of industry standard apps require #Windows.

@DanielMReck @digital_carver @ubuntustudio Yes, I know what you mean. I think this will change not only because Linux is getting better as a platform but also because many standard apps especially Adobe ones are getting stale, AI capabilities notwithstanding.

@digital_carver I left windows a few years ago now due to how buggy it was and that was running a fairly beefy rig which was well past recommended specs.

Once windows starts to have an issue, it can be a pain to resolve and some times the end result is having to wipe the os drive and start fresh (repairs dont always work either)

Used linux for work, now i use it for gaming with the exception of maybe 3 games due to cheat protection.

Plus performance is just better and open

@digital_carver The big tell was when #Microsoft made moving to a new #Windows version free as long as you were upgrading an existing installation. That would not have happened without a plan to replace the lost revenue. Since then, it certainly appears new development has focused on exploiting Windows to generate revenue, not improving the experience of using Windows.

@digital_carver

I have now tried both systems. With Linux I have to ask Google how to solve my problems. I tied up LOTS of system resources failing to get Wine to run several Windows applications I desperately needed to run (then had to ask Google how to clean the system).

With Windows I can often ask Windows how to make the system work - but I still ask Google. As long as I castrate Win11 and turn off everything I don't want, it isn't too bad.
