What I think every time someone tells me they wont use school math in the real world....

@freemo

The funny thing about "they didn't teach us how to do taxes!!!" is the government puts out a 100+ page instruction book every year along with the 1040 form that tells you exactly how to fill every box of that thing out.

But it involves paying attention, reading, and following instructions.

Most people don't want to do that.

@kilroy_was_here @freemo
It's really not that difficult if you don't have something crazy going on and aren't taking more than the standard deduction. Just follow what it says on the form, and attach your 1099 if you have one... actually, most people shouldn't have to do much more than the 1099.

@Raccoon @freemo

Exactly. But some people think it's like they're calculating a moon mission and get scared. So they wind up paying somebody to do it for them.

@kilroy_was_here @freemo Wait, 100 pages? I thought the claims that filling taxes in the US is too complicated were somewhat exaggerated, but this really is ridiculous.

@timorl

You dont need to read the whole thing... its not complicated really... most of the pages are optional stuff... Like filling out the basics is just a few pages.

The reason its 100 pages is all the options stuff it covers. Basically so you can do all the fancy stuff the rich people do :)

@kilroy_was_here

@freemo @timorl

Exactly, you aren't filling out 100+ pages, the reason it's that long is to answer every question you may have and cover every situation that may exist in the process of filling out the actual much shorter form.

Like if you were living in the middle of the desert with no internet or phone, with this book and the actual form you can still do your taxes. That's the idea.

@kilroy_was_here

In fact there are two versions, the EZ version is like a page or two.. its the full version that is large with many optional pages...

@timorl

@freemo @timorl

Not anymore, it was discontinued in 2018 after the 1040 was redesigned to be much simpler and only take up 2 pages.

@kilroy_was_here @freemo . I get what you are saying but I think that common refrain about not teaching taxes in school is more about what schools choose to emphasize in their teaching efforts. Hell, you can just pick up a book and learn all about WW2 if you want to or just about any other subject as well. The point is more that the school system emphasizes intellectual pursuits under the mostly false assumption that parents will teach kids practical skills at home.

@freemo Isn’t that Principles of Finance, an optional business or stats class?
