If I tell you I don't add salt to my food, don't take it to mean I won't take salt ever
If I say I like a leaders balls for doing the evil he/she did as an example of 'there is much more possible than you think from 1 person', then don't take it like I like I'm a fan or love anything more than that
If I write something here as an example, don't always take it like it's more than just an example!

For most of my life, I thought that "error" and "err" were just two different spellings of the same word. I didn't realize that "err" was in a different part of speech with a slightly different scope of meaning.

I think your right,
but just so happens it doesn't make a difference in this case or many cases that involve humans because of the wider meanings error has (an action attributable to bad judgment, ignorance, inattention) very similar to err which is perhaps more general in making a mistake or being incorrect / wandering off course.
In this case I'm more right / more specifically correct (by chance) because I meant more specifically the misconception or misjudgment from this amplified when someone hears this and makes it = that
