The hounding of Wil Wheaton off here bothers me greatly. Suggests the admins of Mastodon instances can’t be trusted to do the right thing vs the easy thing (which I don’t blame them for entirely) and highlights a fundamental problem of social media. That the ill informed baying crowd gets what they want is simply not good enough.
@freemo it strikes me that one part of the problem is having a reporting system that can effectively be used to spam an admin into submission.
@realmattseymour Yea i addressed this in an earlier post, I agree. A few simple changes could fix that too.
@realmattseymour As a consequence, I was wondering if Mastadon supports migrating accounts between instances, if one instance turns out to not be a suitable home.
@realmattseymour This would let us weed out instances, in effect.
@jory
Indeed it does. Though it needs to be improved. Right now it just forwards to your new account on the new server.
@tmy that’s probably true.
@realmattseymour not involved, but he doesn't seem like much of a victim where I stand. Came here, started shit-stirring, unpleasantness in all directions, and then he left. Whatever, no great loss.
It *does* highlight that the current moderation tools are vastly inadequate (if 60 reports a day makes the system unusable, that's a massive flaw), but that's separate concern with various possible technical solutions.
@realmattseymour
Easily deployable personal instances could be a solution for this where the bullied victim could create their safe space while they still can connect to the fediverse (for the parts that worth connecting to)
@realmattseymour Agreed, my only hope is that #QOTO can and will be better than that.
