All right, I’m getting used to many of #Mastodon ‘s quirks, but I’m still bummed about an unexpected feature: the lack of thumbnails when I or others post links. I don’t know why it matters so much, but I just have a complete disinclination to click on a bare url, I can’t really QT someone into my feed even if only to add context and hashtags, I can’t swipe from other social media sites without directing traffic to them, and sharing news stories looks like a feverish forum post.

@AmberWavesofFlame Link previews are a thing but because it takes up server resources it's an instance-by-instance question about whether it happens and how quickly it happens.
@AmberWavesofFlame The thumbnail thing (Rich Preview it's called I believe) does happen here. It just takes time for the server to go process it.
@AmberWavesofFlame It's something your instance isn't doing, because I have thumbnails on most if not all links that people post after a few minutes. Your instance does the fetch and attach on its own.
