“With 2 ER physicians as parents, none of my 4 children will ever play tackle football. I said what I said. And I live in Texas where they’re in full pads by age 7.”

@natureworks I have a yarrow that somehow manages to look beautiful even when heat-stricken in the early summer before its time to bloom. Instead of turning brown and wilted it turns elegant silver and curly and with its fernlike leaves it looks like living scrollwork.

"I once noticed a park on google maps with a racist slur as a placename, so I changed it back to it's real name. (It's easy to do) Had to do it a few times, over a couple of weeks, until the other person gave up.

Just got an update from google maps: three years later, it's been viewed 500,000 times. That's 500,000 people who didn't have to see a slur, when they were looking for a park.

And that's another example of anti-racism"

Never forget where you came from, because that’s probably where you left your phone.

@mickeykats @timlee it’s not bizarre; it’s cynical. The publication’s interest is clicks and revenue; the journalist is, in theory, more invested in the accuracy and impact of his work product. It’s taken out of his hands for the sake of SEO optimization, appeasing a polarized readership, or catering to specific demographics.

@gotofritz@fosstodon.org @richard_merren @timlee this is especially true when the article is paywalled and requires registration. NYT, WaPo, WSJ… your headlines ARE your output for all but your dedicated readers who are probably read up on the issue anyway. You simply can NOT fix the flaws in your headline with a quote in paragraph 8 and 18, and you cannot dilute the through a methodical laying out of the facts, either.

This post is a pretty good one to post this end of the year note about #crypto I reckon too.

During 2022 Bitcoin consumed 161 TWh of electricity in total, exceeding a country such as Sweden.

Related CO2 emissions were ~90 Mt; again negating the entire global net savings from EVs.

Look, if a core Bitcoin developer's can get their whole wallet emptied out unrecoverably on them, and that developer's immediate reflex is to start calling a centralized authority for help, it's time to stop pretending this entire cryptocurrency exercise is ever going to work reliably.
