The amount of fucking arcane knowledge required to get the simplest things working in is mind-blowing. I just spent a day trying to figure out why the bottom navigation menu isn't working, unsuccessfully. I finally ended up creating a new project based on the bottom navigation menu template, which worked. I then compared the bloody things literally line-by-line, coming to the conclusion that the thing I'm missing is apparently virgin sacrifices, since the code is identical except one version works and the other doesn't.

There's one upside to dealing with all this bullshit: with every passing day front-end development, which until now I considered the bottom of the barrel, becomes more attractive by comparison.

@slowfallinward seriously? I haven't used FF in half a year, but I remember it opening PDFs from tempfiles, just like any other web resource.

@slowfallinward I'm pretty sure this autohide has been a feature for a long time. (And it makes sense, you generally only want the downloads list when you download something.) As for weird shit, that's the generic browser behaviour, when
encountering a file it will display it if it knows how, or try to download it otherwise. Chrome does the same, displays the PDF, webm, image, whatever, with an option to download it instead of presenting a download dialogue immediately .

Imagine going to a software dev conference and they have a talk about good UX presented by a Facebook engineer. Just let that sink in. It's like having a conference on social issues and inviting Hitler to talk about minorities.

@msh @feld hah, sorry for immediately assuming crypto illiteracy then, I've gotten too used to people whose knowledge of crypto comes from bloggers jumping on the hate train who don't understand it either. I think the aforementioned ability to self-publish worldwide and sell directly to customers is a great advantage, and if that's not enough for you I'm afraid I don't have more arguments to offer, besides maybe the classic "decentralisation good".

@lina XDDDDDD
Please gobble Putin's propaganda cock more, you seem to be only a couple of millimetres away from the hilt. Are you actually so far gone that you legit think normal Ukrainians are literal nazis? Or is this some kind of joke I'm not getting and you're "only pretending to be retarded"?

PS: I untagged the others because I thought they may not be as small brain as you and so shouldn't be dragged into this "argument". Which doesn't deserve to be called as such since it's obvious from your first reply you're incapable of rational thought and well researched arguments would be lost on you. I wouldn't even write this if not for the fact that it's been a while since I had the occasion to justifiably insult someone. That comedic value is running thin though.

@lina XD appears to be the only appropriate response, have fun in your alternative universe while people 600km from me are having bombs dropped on their heads for the sole reason of being born in a country too close to Russia.

@lina woah, where are you getting that information from, RussiaToday? God I hate contrarians that see people going "damn the invasion sucks" and immediately create circlejerk groups to create conspiracy theories and swallow russian propaganda like pelicans, all to feel superior to these sheep that are opposed to *a literal aggressive invasion of another country*.

@msh I can literally find an NFT tutorial and mint one without resorting to the Openseas, they just make it easier to find clients and simplify the process. I won't even bother with exchanges, what do you think happens when someone wants to buy art sold in different currency?

The price of gas varies depending on the chain used, which is a great opportunity to remind you that NFTs are a concept not unique to or defined by mainnet Ethereum.

What sort of safeguards are in place to protect creators against theft and fraud elsewhere? Do you suggest there is something magical about NFTs that prevents services based on them from offering the same level of quality as traditional ones? What you call "current sentiment" is bullshit spewed by a loud minority and I'm not even sure what it has to do with artists wanting to get into NFTs since your typical NFT fraud is people selling others' work, which doesn't have the artist involved at any point in the process. I think it's reasonable to expect of an artist to say "here is the legit contract of the art I'm selling, if you see another it's obviously not mine", which is pretty much all that's required.

The "web3 approach" allows someone to self-publish immediately, worldwide, for a one-time payment for the token to be written to a global ledger. I'm not intimately familiar with the traditional alternatives you mention, but I doubt they offer the same reach and stability.

@feld

@cy@mstdn.io @wjmaggos I'd like to interject that "the whole conflict" is about an aggressive invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine. Russia "could've done more to try to resolve the fighting that had killed more than 10k people since 2014", they could've stayed in their shitty country instead of destabilising the region to have an excuse for invasion.

@msh @feld ?
How is "allow artists to sell their artwork directly to customers without having to resort to middlemen, greedy publishers and walled gardens" not a convincing argument?

it was interesting to learn that most mammals are fat enough to float on water without much effort; with the notable exception of hippos, which decided to go for the tungsten cube approach and became so dense they can run on the riverbed.

@nolan I like how most of professional programming knowledge begins with "you know that thing you learned in uni? Well, it's technically correct but practically wrong and if you try to actually do it IRL you're gonna have a very bad time."
