If you spend much time amongst firearms enthusiasts, you'll hear that as one rationale for wanting to carry a gun. (Used to do competition shooting with revolvers and 1911 .45's as a hobby.) I don't know what the numbers say on that; never tried to track down any data on it.

Wow, that's really interesting. I would not have suspected that. I suppose the reason we never hear about the real story is government's tendency to want to avoid embarrassment.
I'm pretty sure I've seen at least one actual war started (or continued) because of the embarrassment reaction. People are hard to figure. 😉

Yes indeed, I think we've seen other cases with some similarities (though maybe not with quite as much cash) recently, like Ms. Spears. I don't mean that the medical condition is the same, but that control was lost to her.

Thanks! Have always wondered what's going on with the "wiring" that the sensory input could be mixed like that, but I'll wait for more clues.

Yep, had two large dresser drawers full of those. A lot were phone chargers with proprietary connectors. Finally summoned the courage to mercilessly dispose of them. 😇

One of the times I was hospitalized for major depression, a couple of the people on my floor had bipolar. They were both really interesting people and we had some long and enjoyable talks about what their illness was like.
It became very clear to me that it's really hard to convince somebody with that illness, which I gather would include Ye, to get treatment. The way manic episodes were described to me made me kind of want one myself. My fellow patients told me how it made them more confident, socially powerful, more intelligent, more persuasive, and so on. Of course, I'm aware of the drawbacks; both were there only because they'd been arrested and the court sent them there. One planned to stay on the meds, but the other couldn't wait to get out and stop taking the pills.
So how the heck do you help a guy who's sick but refuses to accept that, and is simultaneously quite wealthy? And from the looks of it, uses some of that money to buy a herd of "friends" who will never contradict hih?

My name is John Butler.
I'm Maths/Stats Lecturer and Neuroscience researcher in the School of Mathematics and Statistics in TU Dublin since 2015.
My research uses computational neuroscience methods to investigate multisensory processing. My favourite sensory system is the vestibular system it is just great.
I am a member of @neuromatch I’ve contributed materials to the summer schools. I also help organise the Conference and I’m particularly proud of the introduction of Neuromatch for Kids which shows how maths and neuroscience work together.
I really enjoy teaching, I've taught mathematics, statistics and computational neuro to all levels from graduate, down to primary. Here are two modules:

I started off on techhub but I'm trying to reduce the amount of my identity that's about tech. So I moved, and now I guess I need to do this again:
I'm Ash, or Geiiga. 8 months ago I decided to stop having music be a thing I always wanted to do and start actually doing it. Got a guitar and started writing my own songs, mostly about people being abused by systems meant to support them. I plan to start releasing them as soon as my rapidly improving guitar skills allow. #introduction

Sounds like fun to me! I picked up the guitar at age 55 (am 66 now), so I can relate to what you're doing. I'd been a pianist before but let that go at about 30.
I'll tag along with you a while and see where this road goes!

I get to see two varieties (White-breasted and Pygmy) in the front yard pretty regularly. Their behavior is lively and interesting-- even amusing at times. They're a fun bird!

Visual cortex is affected by sounds. Does this mean it is multisensory? Does it represent sounds?
Today in Nature #Neuroscience (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41593-022-01227-x) Célian Bimbard and team find otherwise.
Sound-evoked activity in visual cortex was similar across neurons. Even neurons in hippocampus. It persisted after we cut fibers from auditory cortex!
This activity was predicted by… subtle body movements evoked by the sounds. It reflects brainwide state and behavior signals.
